Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

......goes for months then comes back and bites you?Day before yesterday I did reap the benefits of my stupidity of months ago.Full rear wheel LOCK-UP at 20 mph.Thought I was on a Supersport there for a second.A few months ago I was changing out the rear wheel bearings in my Motomarina Sebring.I pulled out the brakes to clean everything and then like the dummy I m sometimes,I put the horseshoe-shaped brake sring in from the wrong side and re-assembled it.After several months of grinding away at the Aluminum bearing housing the spring had made enough room for itself where it could back out the tangs which secure the shoes.ZAP! Instant lock-up!Fortunately I was going thru town at 20 on a dry road and NOT 35mph in the country or 40 downhill on a wet country road.Narrow miss!

Re: Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

I had something along the same lines happen to my 89 mitsubishi montero. After off roading the water broke down all the grease in the wheel bearings about 1-2 weeks later. It took a torch a hammer and a $100 towing charge to get the bearrings off the axle. its not a moped but i thought it related to your story.

Poor guy...Did you drop the bike or just slide to halt? I hate when shit like that happens cause you get all paranoid on your bike and afraid to get comfy as a "just incase" policy.

I once told a girl "no I dont want to date you cause your ugly" and a few months later I saw her again and she was hot, and a kick boxer. So she beat me up =[

Re: Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

don ... it's stuff like that why i'm reluctant to mess w/ my brakes ... but i'm sure i'll have to some day. i'll try to remember to be careful.

LMAO! That's the quote of the day!

Re: Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

Think I woulda left off that last part about gettin beat up by a hot girl but , from the sound of that 1st part (cause your ugly) sounds like you needed your butt kicked lololol

what can I say? Im shallow...

Re: Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

Well,Chris,I'm not a young `un like you so I am a little apprehensive about speed on a `ped.Never had a lock-up on a `ped before. But I'm kind of a logical guy and I am not too worried about lock-up now.(except jail)LOL! I'm thankful I found the problem before the wet road or going fast downhill got me.I'm glad you survived your wreck at high speed and I hope you are very careful with your life from now on.BUT LISTEN,Chris! Did you let that girl beat up on you out of chivalry,I hope,or were you too wimpy or surprised to handle her?I know a guy that was attacked by a mean woman and he just covered up and reported her later.Takes a real man to do that!He has my respect to this day.He is a big guy,but not mean, and physically he could have mopped the floor with her.Real men are GENTLE men!

Re: Ever do somethin' stupid that.....

Aw,they're simple,Miguel.I just had made the stupid mistake of not watching which side the spring was on when I removed them.Don't be afraid to disassemble and re-assemble if you concentrate on one thing at a time.I remember I once had to do a complete tear-down of a 400 c.i.d. Ford wagon's engine and I had the good sense to take notes and photograph the complete(before tear-down) and (in-progress)ongoing tear-down and was able to figure out the myriad of possible bracket positions without too much pain on reassembly.A pic is worth a thousand words,Miguel,as you well know.

Many a time, dude...many a time - hell, some folks call that "Marriage", but I digress.....

I dunno exactly if it was something I did, but once had the master link on a Puch Austro-Daimler pop on me, which is real bad since that's an enclosed-chain drive (which I now HATE) and the chain, instead of falling off wrapped around the rear sprocket and CRUNCH, jammed....

It was muchlike tying a rope from the back of yer ped to a fencepost, takin off, then runnin outta rope at 35mph...Urghk!

Head over heels, over the bars, forward somersault, headfirst into a rock - and up till then I was ambivalent about helmets, tho I always wore one...sure made a believer outta me, you shoulda seen the chip in it !, coulda been my skull ! (which mighta broke the rock, now that I think about it...).

Anyhow, lesson learned ? Helmet = good, enclosed-chain drive = bad.

Well,Chris,I'm glad you're admittin' it.But I still think you probably in the back of your mind were `defending' rather than `takin' the offensive'.But you know,I used to weigh 140lbs. at 6'0"+ and there wasn't any woman could've whipped me if I had been a `pig' enough to hit her.......200 lb. men couldn't handle me then. But I was taught NEVER hit a girl and it stuck in my mind. You see, when they say:`It's not how much dog is in the fight, but how much fight is in the dog',you've really got to measure if the man REALLY wants to HURT the girl. And REAL MEN DO NOT DESIRE to hurt women.See what I'm gettin' at?
