Puch 2-speed shifts too early

Mike (MA) /

Hello,

My Puch 2-speed engine shifts too early. I've never cracked it open, because in all other respects, it works fine. What determines the shift point? Spring? The flow of transmission fluid? Is the adjustable? Would a greater level of fluid or more viscous fluid change the shift point?

Thanks,

Mike

well if you want it to shift at a higher speed put a bigger sprocket on it

Re: Puch 2-speed shifts too early

You're one of those guys who twists the throttle to full the minute you take off aren't you? Just slowly give it some gas and when you find it starting to shift then mark that speed. That's the speed at which you usually shift. Keep it under that for large hills. Nothing much you can do about it.

Thanks Ivan, but I want it to shift at _higher_ RPMs, not higher speed. And Ben, I don't know what description I gave that would have led you to your conclusion about what type of "guy" I am, but you've got me peg'ed wrong. With a gentle take-off, the engine still shifts very low on the RPM scale, and then it sort of "lugs" the engine, as the higher gear is too big to shift into w/ so little momentum. I still believe this is adjustable or fixable if understood.

Re: Puch 2-speed shifts too early

Yes, of course. I said you were the "type of guy". I'm so guilty for false generalizations and assumptions and of course bias stereotyping and labeling. Someone should just come and put me out of my misery. Forgive me father for I have sinned. (heh riiight). The only thing I was pointing out is what my experience with others has shown on this problem, most people around here just twist the throttle all the way in and wonder why they have trouble sometimes. I figured it was due to ignorance (not insulting, the unknowledgable one). That was all. If that was the case then it was a simple "don't do it" but if it's not then considering getting a bigger sprocket or something along those lines. Glad I could help.

Re: Puch 2-speed shifts too early

do you have a 18 tooth sproket on the front and 40 on the back? thats the correct ratio. do you have the correct level of new ATF in the transmision? it is supposed to be filled until it comes out the hole on the side of the transmision, if its not at the right level it wont shift right. hope that helps.
