Avanti reports

I have seen some serious trashing of the Avanti Supersport by a couple of people in the other forum, and would like to hear from some others, good or bad about the Avanti products. My own experience with the Autopower has been nothing but good. Ken

Re: Avanti reports

I have had an Avanti Autopower for only about 2 mos. I have had no problems.

A nice bike for a bigger guy like me.

Re: Avanti reports

avanti is a good company there are a few problems with some mopeds but there are bigger problems with other types of mopeds. i think that the supersport is a good moped and the autopower is pretty good too. people just abuse there mopeds or don't know how the work so the mess them up by trying to make it go faster. i work at a shop and tomos it the most common moped to come in with really bad problems and missing parts/worn out parts. i think we had a total of 4 avanti mopeds this summer come in because of problems and 3 of those were dirty carbs. one was a kid who laid it down really hard going about 50 mph.

I guess some of you saw my post about a siezed up Avanti. Well, I took the gearbox casing off of the gearbox and I found that the rubber washer (not sure what it's called but it was the only big rubber one in there) was broken. There were big chunks of rubber washer in my gears and all around them. I cleaned it out and am going to need a new washer.

Anyone know where I can find a replacement washer online? Also, I might need a new gearbox cover because I broke the rubber liner that keeps the oil from leaking out.

Re: Avanti reports

Right,Avanti! I'm tryin' to tell some of these guys that the problem has bee mainly with the Supersport. You know, some people just don't believe it `til they experience it though.Me?I'm not committing to Avanti until the problem is resolved.About parts: Any Avanti dealer, even Tony Weinfurtner at Ironton Oh (the motorcycle shop, twein@bright.net ) could probably fill you in on the problem's cause and order parts.

Re: Avanti reports

You see Don...The rubber washer...As I was told by a dealer in D.C. when I was there...This rubber washer problem has existed in INDIA for years on other mopeds as well he said like the Hero Majestic (Might be same company producing the clutch for Avanti) and he said it results in the rear wheel lockup just like has happened to me and others. He told me long before it happened to my Supersport...He said, "Just you wait and see". He had stopped carrying any of the Indian made mopeds because of problems. I wrote to the CEO about this and never got a reply...Shortly thereafter they took down their website...Mind you it happened to mine a day after the mods had been done but I don't think these other fellows who had it happen to them had anything done to theirs...This problem is gonna get someone hurt...

Re: Avanti reports

So,DaveI,is there something Avanti owners can watch out for or replace before it happens to them?As far as Hero-Majestic:I own an Ankur, but it has a dry clutch.I know there are other Hero-Majestics,like the Pacer and Gizmo that have different trannies from mine though.I'm holding off buying one even though I really like the Supersport and the Stinger.I guess time will tell just how extensive this problem will become. You've certainly done your part to warn people of a possibly dangerous problem,so there's no bloodguilt on your part if a fatality occurs because of it,heaven forbid! I don't like the idea of rubber or neoprene as a moving component in a tranny anyway.I don't think the Italian bikes(2-speeds)have this concept.Only the Garelli.I haven't seen it in TOMOS and Franco-Morini MO2 engines. Is this rubber washer in with the oil?If you think that Cosmo owners should check the washer for wear, let them know.THANKS!

Avanti Autopower is junk....Tranny rattles and vibrates. The importer J & J of Phoenix will not respond to warranty in any way. I purchased mine from 5 Flags in Florida. They keep refering me to "Buddy" of J & J in Phoenix. I am currently researching the possibility of taking them to court. Best advice I could give onyone IS: "Don't buy an Avanti" and don't buy anything from J & J or 5 Flags.

Re: Avanti reports

Sorry you had such trouble,Dick. It's not right for them to get by with this.I hope you get full recompense and something for your trouble to boot.I had really hoped to purchase one of these, but alas, not now.The reason I was so interested in them is because of the tough Motorcycle sized frame and heavy suspension and brakes along with 40mph capability. They're billed as 30% larger than many mopeds, and I was gonna go for that.

Re: Avanti reports

Indeed Don I like the ride of the Supersport alot...It feels like a small motorcycle...

I don't like trashing the bike in the newsgroups and I was hoping that there would be a better response from the manufacturer or importer to this problem.

If I were a parent buying a moped for my son or daughter I definitely would NOT buy the Avanti for them.

On the rubber washer I have not opened mine and as you know I'm away so I can't check it...When I get back I'll be taking mine in to Steve's Moped in Dumont, NJ to get repaired and I will check and see exactly the problem then and if there is something that can be done to prevent it from happening...But that won't be until March...

I was searching Avanti and VIP issues in response to a PM from sluggzly adams. This 11 year old thread is a good heads up on the Avanti/Cosmo/VIP clutch rubber and rear hub challenges.

So far mine is OK, but there is a questionable vibration at near WOT and the rear hub is solid so far.

Any VIP owners thought about or try a neoprene replacement for the clutch rubbers?

The elasticity of neoprene might not be good enough.?

Just a guess.

Re: Avanti reports

Welcome to 2012 where you can get replacement clutches. Problem solved. Run the right tranny fluid and they'll last longer.

thanks cosmo. been lookin at it (have yet to take gear box off) and i do believe the 2nd clutch rubber is engaged because it seems to lock up a bit when rolling it backward. probably just soak it in some kerosene.

The stinger had a ranch dressing looking stuff in the tranny. A beautiful emulsion. The 2001 bike had about 98 miles on it when I got it. That averages out about 9 miles a year. The clutch at first was dragging at idle and shifting inconsistently. After a thorough spraying out and letting it sit open in some very dry weather and then a few changes of oil it now works nicely with no idle issues, no rubber shit in the oil or case. (edited)

Re: Avanti reports

I have a 78 VIP that I bought with .7 miles on it and about 5lbs of rust. After complete dismantle and clean up, it runs and shifts like new with the original rubber clutches in it (Italian). That oil/ranch in cosmo,s has got to be way wrong! looks like water in the oil. Mine only has about 20 miles on it now, so can't really testify as to longevity. But I think Avante's would do better with Italian rubbers.

So, the original Italian source makes a better rubber?

The Indian clones and after market replacements are inferior in some way?

I was trying find that out from the VIP owners here.
