damn nose bleeds

chuck russo (va) /

i was riding my ped today and i got the worst nose bleed i have ever had, it bled for almost 25 min. right after it started i stoped at 7-11 and ran into the bathroom and the attendant was yelling at me cuz blood was everyware . and i used almost all the papaer towels for your hands on my nose. i ruined a nice shirt and pants and i ahve no clue on how it started but it gushed blood out like there was no tomarrow

has this happened to anyone else while they were riding?

Re: damn nose bleeds

That sucks!

It was most likely caused by the wind in your face going up your nose and drying your sinuses and making your inner nostril tissue crack and bleed. Don't interpret this idea is valid, I'm no doctor or anything, that's just my opinion. I had a bad nose bleed in the shower once. It turned the water in the bottom of the shower blood red. It was f*cking awesome!! I thought it was, anyway.

brandon, i just have to say that that picture of you with the slayer shirt is badass. slayer f*cking rocks!

Re: damn nose bleeds

Have you been taking any medications such as anticoagulants or anti-inflammatories?

Were you wearing a helmet? Could be attributed to barotrauma , with the wind in your ears and nose. What was the average ambient temp where you were riding?

Chuck;

Hey's my trick for cool/cold weather riding. I've had the same problems and live in NOVA too. It's the combo of lower humidity & cooler weather we are experienceing. Here's an old biker trick, but works well for MOPEDS too:

Sometimes I wear a folded over (outlaw style) bandana to protect the lower face from cold. This also works for rain too, which feel like BB's on your face. (PS if you really want to look B-A..ed, get a black leather face protector). As long as you are driving sanely and wearing a helmet and it's cool (temp), most of the FCPD are pretty understanding re the interpretation of the VA Mask Law (i.e., concealed identity in public) and will let you slide. But just remember, it can be their "probable cause" for stopping you and citing you for other offences (in your case checking your age, and etc.), so if they do, just be polite. Chances are you'll get off with just a "drive safely" in the end.

Re: damn nose bleeds

I'll tell you Rich,I'm thinking seriously of getting a big tall wind shield for my `peds or making one.THAT WIND !! Chill factor city!! I have to put gloves inside my insulated leather gloves sometimes! And my knees get cold even with thermals and bluejeans.I guess I'm getting soft, but I ride for pleasure.I can see where if I can foil that wind I'll be able to ride at a lot colder temp..But you know,in the summer, that is the greatest thing about `pedding. If you're moving, you're cooled down considerably and no air cond. needed.

Re: damn nose bleeds

Ron Brown /

Rich,

Does this mean they can pull over anyone in a full face helmet, or a Moslem women in a veil?

Ron

Re: damn nose bleeds

Ron Brown /

Don,

Check the sales at the sporting goods stores and pick up a thinsulate snowmobile suit. Wear a full face helmet with a skier's neck protector tucked into suit and helmet, round it off with riding gloves inside snowmobile mittens and you will be good down to the low teens.

Ron

Re: damn nose bleeds

Great,Ron! I'm sure that would cover me as I have NO PLANS to be out at less than 20 degrees.Do you think that a open faced police style helmet with a full face bubble would be o.k.?Boy,I don't know about the snowmobile mittens, though. How am I gonna shoot those mangy `ped-wreckin dogs' with my CO2 BB gun?Not to mention those `ped-wreckin' deer with my Ruger 44 Mag.?I've just about got all the moped-chasin' dogs on my regular cruisin' routes trained anyway. But every once in a while a newby to the route has to be trained.THANKS!

i think i am going to get a windshield for my moped, i saw a used one on ebay. i was the high bidder then i was outbid. im gonna check the local cycle shop for a small universal windshield

hopefully this will help with the nose bleeds

damn nose bleeds/winter riding

Reeperette /

I've had it happen on occasion, in cold, dry conditions...I just ignore it...blood don't really bother me, and I've spilled enough to the road in my time anyhow.

It gets bad enough I just tear some tissues off the minipack in my coat pocket and plug the holes.

As fer lower face protection, I got some bit of skiing gear that covers the lower face quite nicely, even if it does make ya look like hannibal.

Cold weather gear ?

Fullbody snowmobile suit - dubbed "the super suit" cause it allowed me to make rounds at a security job I held in eighteen below once, when no one else would do it...irony of that being, no thief in their right mind would BE out there, but rules are rules.....

Anyhow, layered, thermal undergear, two pairs of pants, sweater.....field jacket liner, armor over that, suit over the works.

Military wool glove liners, and over them heavy cycle gloves with extra insulation that go up to mid forearm and can be zipped over the suit sleeves for full protection.

Boots with two pairs of hunting socks, obviously...once had a battery operated heated pair, but dunno where they got to.

Ski mask, Goggles, lower face protector (ski-wear item) and a Helmet.

Did once have a laffer of a moment at a 7-11 where they called the cops before they realized I was just a half-frozen cyclist looking for some coffee, cause I didn't yank the ski mask before walkin in....even the cops thought that was funny.

Oh well.

Cold ? hah, no such thing as too cold !....

Re: damn nose bleeds

Well,I don't want to seem bigotted, but I wouldn't mind seein' `em checking out the Eastern women(and men) a little more closely in these uncertain times.I know,it's not every Arab's fault that some idiot like O-Sum-ha'-Bin-Lamebrain' went `mad dog' on the civilized world. But there's no easy solution to it and some people, probably many people are going to suffer restrictions or inconvenience because of the `evildoers',just because in this instance they are Eastern people and the GRAVITY of the situation and future possible devastation and carnage demand everyone's diligent attention.Heck,I suffer driving an extra 8 miles a day to work because of increased security at my plant. If it makes for a safer America and world I'm willin' to put up with it.I know, I'm goin' off a little too seriously here.Sorry!

Don,

I think the heightened awareness of the actions of certain ethnic groups is definitely warranted under the present circumstances. Actually, everyone untill they figure out wher the anthrax came from.

My point was that I had no idea a law existed that could make a full face helmet illegal.

Ron

Re: damn nose bleeds/winter riding

Man,Ree! If I put all that stuff on,The first thing that would happen to me is I'd get the urge to run to the restroom!Murphy's Law,you know! Those gloves sound good!May have to look for a pair of those. We're just a bunch of Hillbillies down here in Southern Ohio and store owners don't get too nervous at ski masks, although I make sure i say something reassuring to them when I enter.Besides, you're in gun-toting heaven down here and criminals best watch their `Ps and Qs'.Not too much serious crime where the perps have a good idea that someone within arm's length of them is `carryin'.

Get an electric vest ?

I broke mine out about a month ago (for the motorcycle).

I think they are all designed for 12V... and I don't know how warm they would get on a 6V system.

This one here is about $65

<IMG src="http://i-bmw.com/bmwhp/Electvest.jpg">;

It comes from this place (small home business)

New Age Motorcycle Accessories Ltd. PO BOX 360 Errington B.C. CANADA V0R 1V0

The one I have is a little higher quality and is made in Ohio (I think) by Widder for about $90.

Re: damn nose bleeds

Well, they wouldn't make them illegal ,would they,Ron? Just would make you a vulnerable target of harassment by the police, right?

Re: Get an electric vest ?

If it's made in Ohio it's got to be top-notch Fred! (;>) Seriously, though,my problem is with the extremities mainly and my face.Brrrrrrrr!

Re: Get an electric vest ?

Ron Brown /

Fred,

On the average ped, unless you start turning off non-essentials like lights, brake lights and horn, I don't think you could even come close to running heated clothing.

Ron

Re: damn nose bleeds

Ron Brown /

Don,

From Rich King's post:

"most of the FCPD are pretty understanding re the interpretation of the VA Mask Law (i.e., concealed identity in public) and will let you slide. But just remember, it can be their "probable cause" for stopping you and citing you for other offences "

Sounds like a law against full face helmets to me.

Ron

Re: Get an electric vest ?

The current draw is quite low.

And my peds have never had working lights anyway... so it wouldn't make any diff in my case.

But I have never bothered to hook it up to the ped anyway.. because of half the windchill factor.. and short trips.

I use the 1 piece snowmobile suit also.

And Don... the whole point of warm clothing is to keep your core body temp up... if that is up... warm blood flows out to the extremities... so they don't then 'get cold'... once your core body temp drops it doesn't matter what you have on your hands or legs/feet... because your body mechanism shuts off blood flow to those areas.

You are about the only one here who does long rides much.

That warm flow of heat from an electrically heated vest is ....wonderful !.... on certain days.

Re: Get an electric vest ?

Windshields are great, except they cut down on proformance, big time. I've got one on the Derbi. I wanted the big one that is listed on the Derbi Homepage under accessories, but the Dude who imports all Derbi stuff into the USA down in FL only gets the little sport ones. Basically it is for looks, but it does manage to channel some wind (and rain) directly off of my face. Tailshields???? Nah, I wear overalls, they just say no to creak.

No Don, the moped terrorist, Bin Mopedin, got arrested last week down by the local Harley Shop. However, the authorities are still lookin for his accomplice, Bin Workin. Man that Dude is really illusive. Sercuity Forces are looking for him everywhere.

Re the ? about full faceshields. Who knows, certainly some of those darkend one that look like an insect or alien faces could be questionable, particulaly if you were off of the bike or ped. Re the islamic chix's in a "chadder"(??), they'd be lucky to get out of the driveway before the ped bogged down in a tangled mess. There aren't enough "fan belts" in the world to help them.

You guys are too much. See Ya.

Rich

Re: Get an electric vest ?

Okay,Fred! Thanks for the tip.I've got a pair of battery powered gloves I've never used at the house.May have to break them out.Yeah,I'm a sucker for long rides,Fred.I love to use them as an excuse to get away fom the house all day,or get out of a chore that I really should do.....sometime.You see,it goes like this: Linda says`Don,that carpeting has got to be replaced today.' So if the weather's good that day ,I say `Honey,I'll go mopeding today `cause tomorrow it may rain,o.k.?' (IF there's the slightest chance of rain I get by with it).See?But I've got the best girl in the world as far as understanding goes!

On Murphy's law..

Reeperette /

One of the things I like about that suit is it makes that particular hassle nonexistant.

The main front zipper goes down that far, and can be unzipped from either end.

Re: On Murphy's law..

Well,that's neat! I'll bet Murph's mad about that!Ha!

Re: Get an electric vest ?

chuck russo (va) /

im gonna be riding all through winter this year. there not very harsh in va but we do get our share of snow and ice. i plan on wearing my snowboard jacket, jeans, some hunting mask thing, and leather gloves

im getting a new back tire as soon as i can get a ride to the moped shop because its a lil far to ride my moped to.

Re: Get an electric vest ?

Heck! Take some fix-a-flat and tube repair patches and go for it! If it ain't over 70 miles,it ain't too far.Just leave early because of this blasted Daylight Shaving time.

What is the output on a ped?

My Widder electric vest draws 33 watts.

What does a 'typical' ped put out.. ?

I will never hook it up... just curious.

What is the output on a ped?

Reeperette /

12 Volts @ 80Watts for a Targa.

-R

Tubes.

Reeperette /

Or just go to Walmart and buy BELL Self-Sealing tubes.

They have a sorta fix-a-flat stuff already in em, and seal automatically.

They're bicycle tubes and looked a little thin, so I bought em an inch or two over the size...I got 17"s in my 16"s - and since I've started usin em, no flats.
