I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

Chris--cincinnati /

I just aquired a 14mm carb off a Maxi that I purchased. My Puch Maxi currently has a 12mm carb. What else do I need to replace, if I want to use the 14mm carb? Will it make my ped faster. I already know, that just switching my carb out with the 14mm is a bad idea, since I tried that and it didn't work so well. Any suggestions?

For the best performance, you'll want to put a 14mm intake manifold on, as well. Some re-jetting may also be in order.

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

a larger carb will make you go faster ... but you'll have to adjust a few other things. did that carb come w/ a jet? i hope so. you'll need a different size jet than in the 12mm carb. probably go a few sizes higher.

also, brandon is correct on the manifold, try to get a larger manifold to match it. but even w/ just some rejeting, you should do much better.

Is the jet the thing that attaches to the cylinder head? I am still learning how to fix my moped. We used to have a guy, but he got fired, and disapeared. Now we have to fend for ourselves completely. I would much rather do it all myself anyhow.

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

nope. the jet is on the bottom of the carb. (granted, i know the dellorto carb much better than the bing). take off the float bowl. if you look, there should be a gold screw that goes up into the carb body. that's the jet. take it out. there is a very tiny whole through it (if you hold it up to a light you should be able to see some light).

those wholes are tiny and can get clogged easily (if they do, you can usually just spray the gunk out w/ carb cleaner), so don't run w/o an airfilter. the wholes are slightly different sizes on different size jets. you should see a tiny number stamped on the top of the jet (where you screw it). that's the size of the jet.

the jet allows air to come into the fuel mix and make your moped go. depending on the size carb, manifold, etc. you might need a different jet. a 14mm carb probably needs a slightly larger jet size.

for example, i used to have a dellorto 14.9. it took a 49.5 jet. then i got a dellorto 14.12, that took a 51 jet. now i have a dellorto 15.15, that takes a 53 jet. you can use different jets to lean out fuel mixtures for performance tuning.

jet sizes are different for puch, but they should go up as you get larger carbs. the new 14mm carb you have should have a jet in there. chances are, it's the right size.

So you think that I should get a larger manifold and I will be cool? I have another question. You know the "top part"of the carb, where the two screws are, the choke slide, the pin? Do I need to use the "top part" from the 14mm carb, with the 14mm carb, or can I just leave the "top part" from my 12mm on there, and just use the bottom half of the 14mm?

I'm not 100% sure, but it should work. It will fit and it won't damage anything by trying, but I don't know if the slides will be the same restriction. using the slide from a 12mm carb might make it idle fast, because there is an extra millimeter of air travel possible at the bottom of the venturi, so It might be like holding the throttle open just a hair at idle (which could probably be adjusted out by the idle screw). But again, I'm not 100% sure. It doesn't hurt to try it out, though. Hopefully, someone else knows a little more that I do and can answer your question with a little more confidence :)

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

if you have the parts of the 14mm ... .use them. i know it's a pain to play w/ the bing carb, but always use the right parts whenever possible.

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

Could it hurt to put the 14mm carb on there, without a new manifold? Would I get a speed increase?

A little bit, but not as much as with the 14mm carb.

Do you mean the manifold? Don't confuse me Brandon :)

Sometimes.

I hope this helps :)

Just kidding, that was an intentional attempt at confusing you. Well, I thought it was funny and that's what's really important :)

Anyways,

You can put the 14 mm carb on a 12 mm intake manifold and it won't hurt anything, and this combo will give you a little bit of extra performance over the 12mm carb 12mm intake combo. But, for the best performance, a 14mm intake manifold should be used if you can find one.

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

a larger carb than manifold combo should work fine ... but it might not fit as snug. my 15mm carb on my bianchi sometimes pops off while riding from my 14mm manifold. just be sure it's on tight, or use some sort of shim.

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

The "moped-mechanic" at Montgomery Cyclery in Old Montgomery can help you out with the jetting. He has a wide selection in stock.

He also "had" 14mm intakes as well and probably still does.

I am not sure exactly where you are in Cincinnati but this is the closest place for these parts. And the prices aren't bad.

They are in the phone book. Montgomery road between the Cooper Rd. and SR 126 crossings.

Nick, that guys name is Chris, and he got fired from Montgomery Cyclery a month ago. I don't think they have a new guy yet.

Nick,

Where do you live?

Re: I just aquired a 14mm carb from a Puch Maxi

call handybikes (columbus) or akron mopeds (ask for maz). they will have any puch part you need.
