avanti supersport '01 "tranny trouble"

angry avanti owner /

hi, I recently had my barely broken in avanti supersport "lock up" on me. I still can't get it to roll, this was after it became disabled and would start without squeezing the lever. I was looking for info on what might be the problem and I found a couple posts indicating that it's happened to several people... Can anyone answer these questions?"???: WHY, WHAT, HOW, and HOW MUCH TO FIX?? please email or reply on the board if you can help me

Re: avanti supersport '01 "tranny trouble&quo

i don't recall those posts. what exactly locked up on you? did you seize the engine?

now, if it's a brand spankin' new moped ... it's possible that you seized the engine if you rode it too fast during the break-in period. also ... did you make sure to fill the clutch case?

if it started w/o pulling the lever (i assume you mean the starter/clutch lever), then perhaps your clutch is permanently engaged.

i hope someone else can help you out more here. but check "how to fix your moped" in the resources/articles section of this site.

The moped started vibrating violently and then stopped when I squeezed the rear brake lever. This was while it was on the kickstand. It also turned off when the rear wheel was set on the ground. If I rolled it a few feet, it would start, without squeezing anything or pedaling. I had no choice but to ride it home. After that, I tried to start it the next day and the rear wheel stopped turning, it froze and won't move since, pedals will only spin backwards.

Re: avanti supersport '01

Hi. This problem has been discussed on this forum. It is discussed more thoroughly at www.moped2.org. Go to forums and then click on the link at the top of the page. Then look under August and September. You'll find two guys named Sean and Dave1 who have experienced the same problem. Don-ohio who posts to this forum also knows about it. Apparently what happens is the rubber spacers in the transmission get jammed in the gears. At least it happened with your bike on the stand. Some have reported it to lock up while travelling 30 mph.

On another note. Those who have seen this problem: is it isolated to the SuperSport or is it also common to the AutoPower and the Kobra? I've been thinking about an AutoPower but am a bit reticent to commit now.

Seems to me that there has been enough postings about this problem that all the dealers and the importer must know exactly what happens and what it takes to fix it.

It is also possible that even if your guarantee is up, there is a good chance you can make enough noise to get free parts.

so is this something that is easily fixable with little experience? Or is it something i'd need to take to the shop? Anyone know how much it costed for these people to get them fixed?

Also, I need contact numbers/address for the Avanti co. thanks for the help

Angry,

Just curious, but how did you come by such a late model ped without some dealer or distributor to call?

Re: avanti supersport '01 "tranny trouble&amp

I'd start with the dealer you bought it from. If you didn't buy it from a dealer, try contacting the person you got it from and find out where that person bought it.

Re: avanti supersport '01 "tranny trouble&amp

if you're near madison, wisconsin ... contact scooter therapy. they sell avantis. they've always been helpful on moped questions. give them a shot, see what they say.

Don't try it.....

Angry Avanti,DO NOT work on this problem yourself! Get it to the dealer as it's a `life-threatening 'problem and you don't want them to have any excuse not to repair it.Do what Miguel and all the others said and also check out the posts over the last 3 months on www.moped2.org `moped forum'. Don't end up a statistic against moped safety,O.K.?

I bought the moped from someone, I have no warranty papers, or anything else. I'm just trying to get an idea of what's probably gone wrong and how much it would cost to repair, so I don't get ripped off when getting it fixed. I also found that the moped doesn't seem to have enough oil in the gearbox so hopefully that didn't ruin it completely. And just to make sure, tranny fluid and gearbox oil are the same?

Re: Don't try it.....

check back for more precise answers ... but the old garelli used sae 20 non-detergent. if the avanti engine is like the original garelli, it should take something about the same. but check w/ someone who has an avanti.

if the problem is what don-ohio suggests, do get it looked at professionally. most moped places i know are pretty cool. i think you can count on scooter therapy to not rip you off. call ahead, though, or email them. they respond pretty quickly.

if you live near california, look for zippy mopeds. depends on where you live, i guess. post that info ... someone here might know a place/person who can fix it for you.

I am on the east coast in Maryland. If anyone living in Maryland can possibly help me with this, that'd be great... thanks

Re: avanti supersport '01

I have an Avanti Autopower and my back wheel locked up once on me too, during the break-in period as I came down a hill.... I put more oil in the case and it never locked up on me again ( knock on wood )....The bikes are shipped to the dealers without tranny oil...I feel that the dealer was in a big hurry when they

" prepped " the bike and maybe never put enough oil in the transmission case to begin with.... my advice is that if you buy one, before you ride it.... pull the drain plug , empty the tranny case, and then put in EXACTLY 350 ml of 10-30 wt. oil...that way you know exactly that there is the proper amount of tranny oil in there to begin with....also make sure all the engine bolts are screwed in tight...and don't max out the engine during the break-in period.

I have almost 1,000 miles on this Avanti already( had it almost 2 months ) and I like the bike, it is my major form of transportation right now, my car is getting a big rest sitting at the curb all week !

check your crankcase oil levels

no oil in the tran case would easily explain locking up. i hope all the avanti owners are checking on that.

keep in mind that most italian designs (avanti is the old garelli) such as garelli, minarelli, morini, and a few others (not vespa) need oil in their crankcase. if you get a new/used moped, check that out first. you will wreck the clutch (expensive) w/o the proper oil in the case. minarelli takes sae-20. garelli takes sae-30.

puchs take type-f trans fluid. not sure about sachs.

Re: check your crankcase oil levels

The Vespa needs oil in the gearbox in the rear hub.

Re: check your crankcase oil levels

what kind of oil? how much? how do i get in there? i'm new to vespa and was told it needed nothing, since it has a dry clutch. thanks.
