Just got a Honda Hobbit. Any tips?

I just bought a 1978 Honda Hobbit off my friend for $100. It's my first moped. It hadn't been started up for approx. 2 years. I drained it of all fluids and replaced them, replaced spark plug and got it to start up nicely. After riding it for 30 minutes i came to almost a complete stop and then opened the throttle completely and after i had it open for about 50 yards, it started to stall and then completely stopped. I tried to start it a number of time after and it wouldn't start. I took out the spark plug and cleaned it and put it back in. it didn't start. i replaced the spark plug too.I then dismantled the whole engine to get to the carb and i cleaned that and made sure the tubes in it were clear with an air compressor. I then put everything back together and it still didn't start. I can't figure out what to do next. Does any one have a clue of what to do? Also if you have any others tips i should know for as new Honda Hobbit owner, i'd like to hear them. Thanks

First, make sure you're getting gas thru the carb.and then make sure it's not letting too much gas(flooding)into the float bowl.I'd guess it's one or the other from your description.Hondas are notorious for float or needle valve problems from what I've seen.

Re: Just got a Honda Hobbit. Any tips?

yeah, i took out the carb because i float the float bowl water flooded and thought it was stuck flooded because it hadn't been started for so long. but it was fine. maybe i'm going to have to pull off all of my tubes and make sure they're not clogged.

i don't know why i wrote "i thought ther float bowl water flooded," i meant to say was instead of water

Re: Just got a Honda Hobbit. Any tips?

Right,Rob.Clean all parts and passages in the carb.and blow it out with compressed air, especially the small holes and main jet.MAKE SURE the carb. vent isn't plugged(small hole usually near top of carb.).You're sure the exhaust isn't plugged with carbon or the exhaust port at the cylinder? You may just need to click on `resources' above and then `articles' and read and copy Fred's guide `How to fix your Moped'.It's great because it's simple to follow and written for anyone who has the desire to save big bucks by working on their own `ped.

You might check to see if fuel is flowing out of the petcock on the tank. They typically have screen type filters on them that take great pleasure in clogging themselves with tank sediment. If you have any rust down in the tank, this is a likely source of fuel flow problems. (Provided its not the carb's fault, of course.)

yeah, i cleaned the carb again more thoroughly and it runs now. but i really have to finess the throttle so it won't stall.

Sounds simple,Rob! Tear into it and get it perfect!
