keys for Puch

I just went to a locksmith to try to get some spare keys made for the 2 78/79 Puchs I bought. He said he had never seen the key blank before and couldn't make any keys. He also couldn't find a blank in his catalog. Have other people had this problem? Anyone solved it?

I ran into the same problem. I spoke with the fellow, George, who owns MPG Mopeds in Merryfield, VA. He told me that blanks were no longer available. He suggested to me to see if I could get a locksmith to put a new lock on the ped. However, he said it would be a better investment to get a lock and chain that couldn't be cut with bolt cutters, because merely locking the front wheel for the ped will not deter theft that much. You could just pick up the ped and put in in a car or truck. With a chain&lock you can at least lock the ped "down" to something "secure". Anyway, his suggestion sound good to me, so that is the route I went.

Richard:

I may end up doing that. However, in addition to the fork lock, one of my bikes has a removable lock in the carrier that goes through the swing arms and locks the rear wheel from turning. This isn't as good as a chain, but if I just leave it for a few minutes, it can sometimes save me from seeking out a solid object to chain it to. The locksmith did say that if I brought the bike in, he might be able to grind down a Fiat key to work but he wasn't sure.

Re: keys for Puch

I just had some keys made by a local locksmith. He was the only one around that could do it so check around at other shops. The blank that fits my 78 Puch is an ilcoSR61N.

Re: keys for Puch

I just checked. They have a website. maybe they would sell you a couple blanks if your guy can't get them. Hope this helps! http://www.sagesecurity.com/

Re: keys for Puch

What if I don't have a key to make a copy of? Can they make some kind of skeleton key that would fit any "78 Puch?

Re: keys for Puch

Joel;

Thanks for the info. I will take it to the locksmith and see what they can do. He was looking in an ilco catalog for a blank when I was there. He probably just overlooked that blank, or perhaps that is the Fiat blank that he thought 'might' work with some modification.

Re: keys for Puch

Today I took the whole cylinder to the locksmith. He was able to make an old Volvo ignition key fit.

Sounds like a winner to me. Rather than ask flat out how much it cost, let me put it to you this way, was it cost effective?

Re: keys for Puch

$3 for each key. One for my ped, one for my wife's.
