How to stop gas valve leak ?

I've got a ped that's had a leak at the gas valve at the bottom of the gas tank...I took the valve off, saw a bad gasket inside ...now I put on a new valve...the leak is real small now..... my question..... could something like teflon tape be used on the threads to stop a leak ? I've heard conflicting ideas about this...some guys say the gas breaks the teflon breaks down while other engine guys have told me that they use teflon and it's ok under gas.... what do you guys think ?

Re: How to stop gas valve leak ?

The threads are not what seals the fuelvalve. sounds like you just got a bad valve. What kind of moped is this?

Re: How to stop gas valve leak ?

I would think the gas would eat away at the teflon tape.

I had very good luck with cutting off about a dime or nickle thick piece of man made cork that you now find in some wine bottles. Try a bottle of Vendage, enjoy the wine and then cut your new piece to size. It's been over one year without a trickle for me. Really!

Re: How to stop gas valve leak ?

If your shutoff valve is leaking, get a new valve. If you suspect the threads or gasket, seal it with Permatex 2B or Permatex 98H sealant available at any auto parts store.

Jimmy.Yes,you can use Teflon tape on the threads, just don't let it get into the valve.I've never had it go bad on my gas tanks.

Re: How to stop gas valve leak ?

I have an Avanti moped and I'm finding out , by calling moped shops, that the fuel valves( made in India), tend to leak....just bad quality control....I hope the rest of the bike holds up better... the fuel valve nut on my old Puch seems to be able to fit the Avanti fuel tank threads so I am going to get a Puch valve and see if that will work....if not, I may try some liquid gasket type goop...is that Permatex stuff like liquid gasket ? Other then the leakiy fuel valve my Avanti seems to be running ok, the engine runs nice and gives me plenty speed. Thanks for the tips !
