Just got my first moped its a tomos and i have a f

Arterious /

My friend got a tomos bullet TT tomos moped as a tip and he gave it to me. It uses the a35 engine and is more or less identicle to the Targa LX, just looks differnt. I haven't seen this brand tomos anywhere online I was curious if anyone has owned/seen one befor. I've read through a few of the articles in the resources section im kinda curious if anyone knows of any links to a site with detailed information on the engine so i can learn about it. I'm a big newbie when it comes to this and I want to learn. This bike needs some cosmetic work so far Gonna see if I can get it running today befor I go and spend a whole bunch of cash on it I have a few friends to help. But any basic info on how to care or work with a moped or a link to a site with such information would be a BIG help.

If theres anyone here that knows of a decent bike shop in the SW florida area that deals with mopeds that would be a big help too :) I have to get new papers on this thing if I'm lucky I can get most of the info i need from the plate number as it was previously registered. I don't have the manual or the key for the steering lock, luckily its not locked sighs Gonna be a bitch getting insurance on this thing and getting it registered without the original papers.. o well still easier and cheaper then a car! :)

Re: Just got my first moped its a tomos and i have

check the articles section under the "resources" link. look for "how to fix your moped" (aka fred's guide). it's the best place to start. not sure where you can get a tomos manual online, but many of the repair issues are basic and universal, i think.

or ask ree ... he's the tomos expert.

One question I can answer...is why the engines look different.

It's cause they are.

Tomos originally made the "A3" engine, and later was planning to create an "A35" with the A3 head/A5 Trans, or vice verse, and while they never actually built any - they printed a lot of "A35" manuals and decals.

In truth, they went to the "A5" engine system entire, never made even one "A35"

With me so far ?

So it's either "A3" or "A5" - the engine, and it's easy to tell.

A3 = hexagonal cylinder, longer transmission, shorter stroke.

A5 = square cylinder, shorter transmission, longer stroke.

A lot of A3 and A5 parts cross over, but the pistonarm assembly most certainly does not, and the speedkits WILL NOT FIT an A3 engine, just so you don't blow it trying one in the future.

I am currently doing an experiment in what part changeouts would be required to fit that kit to an A3, if it works I will let the forum know.

As for the engine specs...Let me see if I have a link to anything of that sort.

You can always ask for me, if you need Tomos info, anyhow.

woah waoh, so technicaly they uhnmm never really made the a35? <--- confused...

Then why are they being advertised as a35s? Just to hype em up? I'll check out exactly which it is, its advertised as the a35 engine, thanks for the info :)

>>woah waoh, so technicaly they uhnmm never really made the a35? <<

Yep, that's the case....Tomos printed the manuals and decals and such before they committed to the full A5 system instead.

It's a simple matter to know one from the other, the A3 Cylinder is hexagonal, the A5's is square.

Dont forget about the A3N wihich was started a short production in 1990. It has the A3 top end except uses a 12 mm wrist pin and needle upper bearing (as oposed to the A3 10 mm and bras bushing). Bottom end is a tomos A5 (OR A5 as it is commmonly called) Look on you vin tag for the type of engine that origially came on your bike.

Re: Just got my first moped its a tomos and i have

then why is my moped engine stamped a35?

It just is. This bugged me too. Don't ask why, it doesn't make sense.

Ree, you need a Ree-Bot to answer the A35 'misnomer' questions

Man the gas tank smells of varnish! they never drained the thing i wonder how freakin long it's been sitting in their garage!!! You guys know a good way to flush the tank? A guy I know said to use oven cleaner on it shrugs Man why do i get the feeling the fuel hose is gonna be shot..

Art,

All old gasoline smells like varnish. The oil compamies add the familiar gas "smell" to make thier product more acceptable. When the additives evaporate, you are left with the smell of real gasoline.

You need to empty the tank and look inside it to decide what to use to clean it.

What would you guys suggest I use to clean the gas tank?

Re: Tank Cleaner

Ron Brown /

Art,

Are you going to look inside it and tell us what is in thier?

Rust, dead chickens???

Heh sorry yeah taht might help, Looks to be a very small amount of rust in it mainly some dried up "gunk" doesn't look to bad...

Ree, this is my motor

You have an A5 Engine.

Reeperette /

That's an A5 - it has the square cylinder, longer stroke, and shorter transmission casing.

Bosch Spark Plug listed on that spec sheet is the wrong one - use a W8AC Bosch, all the others are fine.

Ration Lists as 50:1 - you can go 43:1 to be on the safe side and for ease of measurement, 2.6oz to Gallon = 50:1, 3oz to Gallon = 43:1

Or use the injector, if you have one.

Cause it's an A5 - yes, you can mount the kit, although that is not reccommended.

Oddball bit - that engine can also be bored to 38.5mm and a Piston&Rings upgrade is available for it.

Happy motoring.

Price list on items I need take a look

Arterious /

If you guys see anything that looks overpriced lemmie know please? Thanks.

TR-008 16 x 2 - 2 1/4 tube $9.95 2x

T4b-208-389 oil tank cap $6.95

T16a-223-704 LH brake lever $12.95

T16a-223-705 RH brake lever $12.95

T12b-207-012/MC-100 (26)Chain Tomos 90 link 415HD $19.95

So far thats everything that needs to be replaced that you can see right off the bat, all prices are in American Dollars. Sometime tomorrow my friend is gonna press the crank arms so i'll be able to try and start it up. If all goes well That should be all i'll have to spend partwise, if not I get to clean the carb and try again.

Ree, thanks for the engine info, and I do have a oil injector.

I won't get a chance to try and start the bike till tomorrow, the thing has been sitting in a garage for god knows how long, i really hope I don't have to clean the carb. Everything I've heard so far says its a bitch to do on a Tomos Engine

Clean it anyway - it's well worth the trouble.

Plus it's a handy learning experience.

As for the prices, yeah - yer doin ok on that stuff.
