Dead battery and weak spark ? possibly a condensor gone bad ?
Run through Freds Guide - in the resources section, and if that doesn't do the job, come back and howl for me....and I'll get to ya.
I figure this one for electrical, and the backfire is caused by unburned fuel, probably pushed back when the engine "pulses" (fails to fire properly)
Let me know, if ya would....when you come up with a solution, and what it is.
