The engine is started by pedaling backwards. It's a function that's exclusive to tomos mopeds. You can pedal forward without the engine starting, but the gear ratio is really low (easy to pedal, but can only be pedaled about 7 mph). And from what I've heard, they are about the most reliable moped on the market today with the best performance.
