got a Jawa Babetta

Hi. I recently aquired a 1979 Jawa Babetta, and am in B.C, Canada. Im in the process of registering it, but apparently I need the RIGHT serial #. Apparently it starts with (e.g)TLJ 210 117 JK XXX XXXT, but I cant seem to find anything like that on the bike. Any ideas where to look? Also, is it a wet clutch or a dry clutch (its been stored, so do I have to worry about replacing any fluids?). Finally, do you have any idea where I might find some form of a manual for it? any help would be appreciated. Im rather good at mechanical things (thats why I wanted a ped), but starting at this from scratch could be hard.

Thanks,

Conal.

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Most mopeds I've seen have the V.I.N.# on the steering post on a label.I don't know how many digits and letters they have;usually 8 to 14 or so.My Cosmo Colt has very few digits, whereas my Motomarinas have many.Get a shop manual from www.mopedwarehouse.com .I don't know about the clutch but someone on this forum should know.BYE!

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Hey! I just saw an OWNER's Manual for a 1980 Jawa 50cc on e-bay.If your bike is around 1977-82 why not bid on it?

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Ok, thanks for the info -if i won the auction that would be a nice start. Ill also look around the head of the bike for the number (I need it so it can be registered). Should turn out to be lots of fun (I hope :)

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Yeah, but a bidders reserve was higher than $15.00 (U.S) so when I tried to enter $15.50 as a maximum bid, the other guys bid automatically went from $3.75 to $15.55.....hes gonna get a surprise...

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Yeah,it's not worth that much just for a scruffy looking owner's manual.I bought one by mistake myself one time.Matter of facvt I bought 2 by accident(Sachs owners manuals),each only a few pages and paid 7.00 ea. for them.

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Thats what I thought. It was only 40 pages, and it was for a 1980 (but still not much of a difference between 79/80). I didnt feel like paying a max of $20 USD (Im Canadian, so that would work out to roughly $1 per page. And, as I know from car owner manuals, theyre not exactly much of a help. What im really after is a workshop manual....

Re: got a Jawa Babetta

Right,Conal! Sometimes it's better to lose an E-bay auction.I remember one time I bid $500 or so on a `ped I thought I wanted.I read the fine print and something was big-time wrong about the deal that I hadn't picked up on.I sat there sweating it out until right at the last a guy `sniped' me.I WAS SO RELIEVED AND HAPPY.If he hadn't outbid me I'd have been `taken'.I can't remember what the problem was, only that it was a major mistake on my part for not reading the print carefully.
