From what I've heard from a lot of ped's ... If it sounds like a dieing animal then
it IS working correctly :) My 2000 Tomos sounds exactly like the aflack duck
Toad is correct, When you turn off a Motobecane, you turn the horn on. It then follows engine rpm to zero. Sounds just like the aflac duck being strangled.

Most mopeds don't have batteries so the current isn't constant and the horns tone varies with engine rpm. At idle they're pretty much useless, if your horn has an adjustment screw on the back side of it you can try adjusting it, but your engine has to be turning at a pretty good clip, so have someone hold the front end down while it's on the center stand as you adjust it. If you can't find a screw on the back to adjust the tone and it still sounds like crap, you'll just have to get another horn.
If it's loud and annoying, it will attract attention. Therefore, it's working.
Yeah, but if you're at idle, you dont "need" to use the horn :-)
My problem is that my ped is already louder than my horn ever gets. If they
don't hear me coming, I'm pretty much outta luck
The horn is an ac powered unit cosisting of an electromagnet and a steel diaphragm. Some previous posts described cleaning the area behind the guard or even drilling out the rivets and cleaning out the inside. The only other possibility is to make sure all the connections are good and the button makes good contact.
One more...take voice lessons. : )

I think moped horns were deliberately designed to sound like dying animals... that way they make drivers do a double take, wondering how a wounded duck is managing to keep up with their SUV :)
at idle or full throttle? My horn sucked at idle, but while 'running' it was fine...
On my Tomos, I could make it sound sort of like a 'siren' by revving the engine up and down
Well, they certainly do get people's attention. But not all forms of attention are the same. You want that car to move, instead of all of its occupants bursting into laughter. I would just mount (mount meaning stick to somewhere on the ped with alot of tape) a foghorn can.
Wally,
If they are laughing at you, just smile and wave. At least they know you are there which is what the horn is for.
