that thing is hideous. absolutely hideous.

Re: Crotchrocket Moped?

I wasn't suggesting that you get one, I just thought it was interesting. I was also amazed that a 49cc engine could go 75-80mph.

Re: Crotchrocket Moped?

The full size 50cc Grand Prix bikes fielded by Kreidler, Derbi, Aprillia and even some of the Japanese manufacturers back in the earl 80's late 70's would do better than 100 mph. Evidently, Yamaha developed a 50cc liquid cooled twin as a prototype powerplant. Its a shame this class no longer exists (to my knowledge). What a great way to experience some relatively low cost road racing that would be!

50cc GP RRing

What ??

You don't remember the 50cc 11 speed 3 cylinder Suzuki Grand Prix roadracer ??

(in about 1964 I think)

Re: small Crotchrocket (no Moped!)

Not actually a "pocketbike" either.

Pocketbikes are tiny (easily less than half the length of that Derbi in the picture)

With a seat height about 12 or 15 inches.

And they are not street legal.

And they are single speed.

And go about 30 mph and have like 34cc.

That Derbi is actually a fully street legal motorcycle capable of being seen and keeping up with traffic.

(has to be 125cc or over to be freeway legal though)

If he got it registered in MI as a moped then somebody didn't tell the truth or examine the paperwork correctly or something.. (not that I mind!... I think that is great... that is the wau it should be)

Re: 50cc GP RRing

Wow! A 50cc triple... that would be something to see. The pistons must have looked like something out of a model aircraft engine. Do you how many carbs they used on it?

Re: 50cc GP RRing

No ... but I would bet there were 3

I actually can't rermember... it was either an 11 speed or 13 speed

Would have liked to have heard that !!

Re: small Crotchrocket (no Moped!)

I own a Derbi GPR and it is a great bike. I also own a Honda NS50F which is very similiar, but the derbi is faster. The story I have been told by a Derbi dealer last week is that Derbi is being fined by The United States DOT. My bike does not have a US DOT sticker on it. Derbi tried to bring these bikes into the US as Mopeds. THe DOT refused moped certification. To get a bike DOT certified it cost big bucks. Yamaha does not bring even 50% of there models to the US because the costs to get DOT cert. is so high unless Yamaha knows it can sell 100000 of that model it wont bring it in to the US. Derbi brought the bikes in to this country and will be fined for everyone that shows up on State Registrations.

Cosmopolitan Motors brought in 200 of the Derbi's with the big bore 75cc kits factory installed for the Derbi Cup races being held at every AMA vintage race meet. You can buy one of the bikes and race it at the major tracks around the US, Daytona included. I met the guy who won the Daytona race last March. Anyway some of the race bikes wound up being street bikes and were registered and Cosmopolitan Motors is in trouble too. The Derbi's wont be for sale in the US soon so if you want one get it quick.

Re: Crotchrocket Moped?

A Honda Spree instead of that Derbi?! You are a geek!

Re: Crotchrocket Moped?

Derbis rule! I recommend them cause I own one! It will only do 60mph stock though on the flat. 75mph downhill.

Hey Rick, I have a factory GPR 100 (75cc) and yes it is a great bike. Your comments were very interesting, I live in Bermuda where both the GPR 50 is sold as a moped and also the GPR 100, sold as a motorcycle. Fortunately we are not subject to your regulations however my burden is a very strict 25 m.p.h. speed limit with heavy fines and penalaties if you offend! Who say's life never sucks!!!!

If you have any more info I would be interested in hearing it, also if you have any info on performance parts dealers that would be useful. We have a good dealer here so if I can be any help ever give me a shout.

Safe riding, Tony.

The Derbi GPR is definately not a pocket bike. Speed of 60 kph at 5000 rpm in 6th gear is normal, the engine rev's to 11000 rpm - work it out!!!

Re: small Crotchrocket (no Moped!)

Any idea where I can get a derbi GPR cheap? I'm talking used...I don't have the $ for new.

Thanks
