I want to rip the soggy sponge off my carb and fit a K&N-style filter, you know, the conical-ish ones, to my Honda Express. This would primarily be to look good, but I presume it would help the performance a little bit.
Has anyone ever tried anything similar to a moped? What did they use (and how much did it cost)? The results?

I think you are more likely to find a Uni-Filter brand foam filter to fit.
Measure your carb mouth and go to a motorcycle dealer and have them look it up in their catalog and see if they can order that size.
