Take the flywheel cover off and the sparkplug out. Spin the engine over by hand with the starter lever pulled in and listen, grinding noises are usually accompanied with metal shavings, so look for them. You might want to drain the gearbox into a can, put some of the oil that came out between your fingers and rub, if it's got a lot of metal in it you'll feel it. Also smell it, it shouldn't smell burnt.
