jetting a puch newport?

my 77 puch just got fresh top end, clean carb, set points015,new plug,run35mph flat land once you hit small incline wont pull the hill.my sport78 puch will pull hill good.live at 6000 ft.i had a 62 main jet in the 77 so i took 58 jet out of 78. didnt work wood not pull at all.put 62 main back in runs fine on flats. i checked plug color its tan.40 to 1 mix.i checked clutch basket tight pads ok.now it did the same thing before rebuild. just wont pull on a hill. motor wont rev up till you get going.any help?

Re: jetting a puch newport?

Hi,Larry! Did you de-carbonize your muffler?Sounds like a classic example, except you live at 6000 ft.

exactly wat i would say. do you know how top de-carbonize your muffler? if not, you can take a wire brush to it or slowly heat it up, or at least thats wat ive heard.

Re: jetting a puch newport?

Well, some of the good mufflers have a removable rear plate which gives you access to the inside, but some of them have to be beaten with a hard rubber or brass hammer or take a stout wire and run it up the tail.Sometimes you just have to spring for a new muffler Can you say BI-TURBO or POLINI PERFORMANCE?

Re: jetting a puch newport?

hi thanks for the reply yes i did the decarbon on exhaust.i took silencer off run up hill lots better! decarbon inside with torch put back on same thing.wont pull on hill or rev up unless i remove muffler. pulled one off other ped that runs fine still no pull.why does it only pull with muffler disconect? do i need to get bi pipe dont want the noise.larry?

Re: jetting a puch newport?

Boy,Larry! Could you have an air leak at the intake manifold?Put a little gas in a lid off a milk jug or motor oil bottle with the engine just slightly warmed up and CAREFULLY pour it onto the connection between the carb and the intake. If the engine changes from idle to higher rpm or drops rpm,you have an air leak there. Also drip it where the intake meets the cylinder, but don't drip any gas near a hot engine or exhaust! And you said you set the points, you didn't say replaced them.Bad points will rob you of power with weak spark. But it still sounds more like a fuel or fuel-air ratio problem to me. Remove your air cleaner and try it once and see if it improves much. Are you saying this `ped used to have hill-pulling power or are you just guessing it should be the same as the other one.It could be a single-speed and the other could be a 2-speed.Just asking!

Re: jetting a puch newport?

hi yes i tryed the checked for intake leak. this is a singel speed trany.i rebuild this to improve pull on hills.same problem then so i thougth if i rebuild it this wood fix no pull on hills i just got finished decarbon muffler pulls good with out muffler on.decarbon did nothing to help this problem.i sanded points with 400 grit.have blue spark at plug. could the clip be in the wrong place? its on the top now. and i have tryed all slots. it runs best with 62 jet is there a standard for this elevation? i guess i will change the points if you think this will help like i said it goes good with no muffler on. larry

Re: jetting a puch newport?

Okay,Larry. You haven't tried it without the air cleaner yet have you?Try that. This is a sticky wicket,by Jove!By the way, when you say you changed the clip, are you talking timing setting?

Is the engine a 1.5 horsepower or 2 horsepower? I think the 1.5 has a thicker head gasket which reduces compression. You might just need to put a thinner head gasket in, or take the head gasket out completely.

Re: jetting a puch newport?

just a dumb question

did you make sure to get the ring end gaps installed at the retaining pins in the piston grooves?

And if you put in a new top end... did you take a few miles to break in your new piston and rings?

I would do a compression check to see if everything is still alright on that new top end.

Re: jetting a puch newport?

hey man

when you sanded the points down i bet you changed the timing somewhat...

go back and check your TDC and timing too.....somebody else said to

make sure you did a gentle break-in after all this engine work....not a bad idea.

man, its a minor problem.....at least it runningFred wrote:

Re: jetting a puch newport?

clip position on the needle valve on carb bing.what works best? larry yes i removed the air box and still it only pulls with the exhaust muffler off.how do you tell if 1.5 or 2.0 hp? sticker says 2.0 newport.

Re: jetting a puch newport?

hi i double checked the compression ok.90psi apox.no torq at start of small hill.thanks for all the suggestions not sure if its the ing. or fuel related?this ped will go 35mph and pass my other peds.i sanded points with 400 grit.i will get points and try this.i disconnected the air box has more top end thats why i thought the clip position on the needle valve wood improve rev on the start.its now on the leanest setting. larry in wyoming
