Derbi GPR50 why so fast?!!

Hey, i'm thinking of getting a derbi GPR50. Can anyone give me any information about them? I currently have a Tomos Targa Lx, witha 70cc kit, but only can get to 65 mph downhill. How can stock GPR50s, which are 50cc, and seem to look a lot heavier, do 70 mph? I don't understand. What do they do to the engines, and how can i do that to mine? Thanx

Because they are painted red ? (red being faster)

If I am correct... the Derbi (and Aprilia, and Yamaha Zuma) are all required to be licensed as motorcycles.

The government has no restrictions for 50cc motorcycles.... 50cc mopeds on the other hand are required (by the US gov) to be 2hp 30mph automatic trannies.

It is quite easy for the manufacturers to make 50cc 2 strokes to make 4 to 7HP... so that is what the Derbi is.

How?... an integrated system of airfilter/carb/reed valve/cylinder/piston/head/exhaust pipe designed for a meduim amount of power and good reliability.

Consider this... a 65cc KTM mini dirtbike puts out 15HP (with a gearbox).. so a 50 could put out 11.5 HP... so 5 to 7 HP is easy.

For you to make yours do that requires all those parts put together in a well engineered system as mentioned.

Frankly... stock Tomos' are already stretching the government restrictions.. I don't know how they did that.

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

Fred already answered your question, but i just want to ask/say:

Are you not satisfied with 65MPH from a MOPED? Thats alot more than most achieve.

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

No he wants his moped to go like 80 so if he falls or something, he can die. Cuz you know 65 is not fast enough right buddy?

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

Did you hear the one about the 320mph moped ??

OK Fred, tell me about the 320 mph ped, I'm all beers, I mean, I'm all ears.

BTW is your ped painted red?, is red short for Fred? :{)

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

320 mph moped...your joking right...would they even classify that as a moped?

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

320 mph... that's wrong. could anyone even hold on @ that fast? i'd think the air pressure @ that fast would blow you off like nothing... and also, wisky... while i don't agree w/ this guy in wanting such a fast moped, i do think he should be able to have what he wants w/o us picking him apart... sure, it's not exactly in "moped spirit" to have something that does over 35 or so, but still... it's his life. ya know? frankly, i'm 100% ecstatic about my moped, and the 30 it pushes, 35 downhill... i'm cool w/ that, and i love it all the more than being able to do 70 or so... it keeps me calm... ya know? well yeah, just my thoughts on the issue... oh yeah! red does make anything faster. a rock painted red flies...

The 320mph moped

A hip young man goes out and buys the best car available: a brand new (red) Ferrari 550. It is also the most expensive car in the world, and it costs him $500,000. He takes it out for a spin and stops for a red light.

An old man on a moped (about 75 years old) pulls up next to him. The old man looks over at the sleek, shiny car and asks, "What kind of car ya'got there, sonny?"

The young man replies, "A Ferrari 550. It cost half a million dollars!"

"That's a lot of money, "says the old man. "Why does it cost so much?"

"Because this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!" states the young dude proudly. The moped rider asks, "Mind if I take a look inside?"

"No problem," replies the owner.

So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. , the old man says, "That's a pretty nice car, all right...but I'll stick with my moped!"

Just then the light changes.. so the old guy leans back out of the car... And the young guy decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 160 mph.

Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly, whhhoooossshhh! Something whips by him, going much faster!!!!

"What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?!" the young man asks himself. He floors the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it's the old man on the moped.

Amazed that the moped could pass his Ferrari he gives it some more gas and passes the moped at 275 mph. Whoooooosh!

He's feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him again. Astounded by the speed of this old guy he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 320 mph.

Not ten seconds later he sees the moped bearing down on him again. The Ferrari is flat out and there's nothing he can do.

Suddenly the moped veers into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear. The young man slows the whole mess down and jumps out, and unbelievably, the old man is still alive!!!

He runs up to the mangled old man and says, "Oh my God! Is there anything I can do for you?"

The old man whispers with his dying breath, "YEAH !.... Unhook my god damn suspenders from your side-view mirror !!"

thinkabottit... :)

hahahaha hic haharhar

thatsa goody, F red

now, what's the record on the Salt Flats for a ped?

Re: The 320mph moped

That was funny fred, but we all know the cooler and faster car is the Lamborghini Diablo which goes 220mph. :)

Bonneville records

red... 320 mph

black...220 mph

all other colors.....between 21 and 32.6 mph

STP stickers add 10 mph to any of the above speeds

leaning forward and smacking your ass adds nothing.... unless you yell yeeeehaw! at the same time

in which case it adds 5 mph

being chased by a cop subtracts 10 mph (or at least it feels that way)

Ron Brown /

Fred,

Stripping down to your skivies and laying flat out on top of the bike does not seem to hurt either.

Yo Rollie,

How's it hanging?

Re: Bonneville records

gimmyjimmy /

way to much math, can't you ya just spray the whole bike and rider with WD40?

that should add 2mph more,... doh!... more math!

Re: Bonneville records

how about a white stripe that would have to add at least 2mph

Re: Because they are painted red ? (red being fast

Mike, I was not flaming him or bashing him, I merely asked why 65 wasnt enough. I personally think Nick's statement was more flaming than mine, yet still funny :-). I happen to think its cool for a moped to be able to do 65 (although you wont push 10,000 miles out of one that is constantly ran at that speed), but I also think it is impractical, the Targa's brakes would have to be applied very, very early in order to stop the bike.
