Hey fellas,

First off it's not a moped it's a scooter. Little tiny wheels no pedals. And Yamaha makes them. They are new and do look good for a damn scooter. My Yamaha shop has a new one for $1699.
Hey Jess, todays modern mopeds don't have PEDALS so what do you call them?
Here in Ontario, the government classes as Nopeds. Not very creative, I know.
Richard
I always thought "moped" meant a MOtorized vehicle with PEDals. My 2000 Kinetic Magnum has pedals. I think 2000 would still be considered "modern"? Also, the Magnums are advertised as mopeds, and there are other types with the small wheels which are advertised as scooters.
In Wisconsin the law states that A Moped is:
1. Any of the following vehicles (excluding a tractor) capable of speeds not more than 30mph with 150lb. rider on a dry, level, hard surface with no wind, a power source as an integral part of the vehicle, and a seat for the operator.
2. A bicycle-type vehicle with fully operative pedals and an engine certified by the manufacturer at not more than 50cc.
3. A Type 1 motorcycle with an automatic transmission and engine certified at not more than 50cc.
Mopeds/Scooters same damm thing in WI

No scooters don't have fully operative pedals. Do they? Maybe I'm totally lost and vino's aren't no damn moped maddog. They have little tiny wheels and I am one who hates scooters. Honda Express, I go with noped.
What's to hate about scooters? I ride an Avanti Autopower and my wife rides a Honda Express SR. The little Honda is a sweet machine and she can blow me away on acceleration and climbing hills, but then I can beat her by over 10 mph on top end. Here in NY state hers is a moped and mine is a motorcycle.
I'm sorry, I am a scooter person. I own a vintage vespa (125cc), and no it doesn't have pedals :p
Here in Michigan they say the Vino is a moped, since it has a 49cc engine, and only goes 30 mph.
The state gov't doesn't care about pedals:
"A moped is a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with a motor which has no more than 50cc piston displacement producing two brake horsepower or less. The moped must have a power drive system that does not require shifting gears and cannot have a top speed exceeding 30 mph on level surfaces."
Anything OVER 50ccs that goes OVER 30 mph is considered a motorcycle for licencing and registration purposes. Scooters don't even factor into the equation. So I have to have a damn motorcycle license to scoot around!!
Anyway, the first time i saw the Vino, I couldn't believe my eyes. It is a very sweet little thing... but a very obvious rip off of a vintage Vespa Primavera. It's just Yamaha's way of jumping on the retro scooter/moped bandwagon.....
It looks like a scoot, it sounds like a scoot, BUT it's not a scoot....
get a motorcyle
As in "Full of it", I assume
You people are so damn biased against scooters (not everyone, but many of you), I just want to know why, if you don't like them, fine, but scooters ARE mopeds in most states (not mine (NJ) unfortunetly), and people with scooters should be welcome to this forum, but all of you would ignore scooterist asking for help on his Honda Elite rather than give him help. What is it about scooters that you hate? The fact that their wheels have a diameter of less than 12 inches, because they don't have pedals?
What about the Quingi (Sundrio) QM50, that has pedals, and it looks like a typical scooter, so what do you guys say about that- is it not moped worthy?
Why cant we all get along?

Wisky,
Relax, you are getting bent out of shape over a few yahoos. At least stick your complaint in a thread where it makes sense. I just spent 5 minutes trying to figure out who wound you up.
Most of us answer whatever questions we can, some people answer questions they can't, I sometimes do not even know if I am giving advice on a ped or a scooter but it does not bother me at all. What I will not do is answer a question if I do not at least think I know the answer, nor will I call a scooter a moped.

... Mr. Forbrains.. !!... you forgot your last name !!
Last name: Head, brother: Dick
none of those distinctions matter much to me ... I look at most of them from a mechanical standpoint... and for that reason I see them as pretty much all the same.
Frankly... because most scooters are more modern... they are actually better performers in general.
Also... the pedals on a lot of mopeds kind of scare me... I am always picturing one hitting the ground while I am leaned over dragging my knee while passing a Ninja 250 and crashing me.
:-o
Does anybody know where I can buy a SCOOPED ?
Tom
You can look at the Quingi QM-50, at www.stevesmoped.com, since I live close to their store in NJ (i baught my Targa there), I go there rather often, and they have the Scoped in stock often (i don't reccommend using the term "scoped" when you call them). It looks nice, glossy plastic, Dash with fuel gauge, BUT the controls feel real cheap, you would need to see for yourself.

Wisky,
In my State (IL) my Kinetic moped is classified as a scooter--(see Ron's post about what defines a moped vs. a scooter). There are many people who have scooters who come to this forum, and it doesn't matter to most of us. I'm not biased against scooters although I prefer mopeds. It's probably a lot easier to pedal home a moped than push a scooter home...mostly, I like mopeds better because I can't drive a scooter--I must be some kind of klutz because I cannot balance those things. I feel like I'm going to fall over, and I can't seem to control them.
I don't particularly care for the pedals on my moped--there should be a way to fold them up so they're not in the way while riding. Many times when I stop and put my feet down, I bang into those darn pedals!
Anyway, don't worry about the scooter vs moped "controversy"--if you could call it that--we're all pretty much in the same boat--cars don't respect us, and most people are jealous who don't own either type.
Hi,Wisky! I admit I'm biased against scooters, but why should that be upsetting to you? I just don't like their appearance. They look like fat little snails or slugs to me.`Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder',you know.BUT I don't give a hoot.If you want to talk about heavy -bodied scooters on little fat wheels,it's okay with me.My heart's just not in to it,that's all! BYE!
aw geez peg,
are you putting moped in boats too?
what's next airpeds? :{)
Im with Wisky. Open this forum to who ever needs help. I own a scooter and a Moped. Mainly because im under age and cant drive the scooter. I think if i need help with it and somebody here might be able to help me then i am gonna ask, on either my moped or my scooter. You can think bad about scooters all you want but frankly i dont give a damn the Honda Aero 80 scooter is better in so many ways. the suspension is so much better and the weight makes it so much easier to handle more confortable to ride and much quieter. If i can give anybody help on either scooters or mopeds i plan to.
I'm with you (and Whisky) I own both a Moped, 76 PUCH Maxi w/a 70 cc euro kit and a scooter, a Derbi Atlantis. Both are quick and easy to ride, though not at the same time. (haven't figured that one out yet). And both are considered to be mopeds by the state of VA. I just enjoy riding them on the back roads through the No. VA "hunt country" and "inside the beltway" because they are fun to operate. Like you, I think we should use this forum as an information vehicle re understanding mopeds and fixing problems w/peds. The peds vs scoots contriversy is an "unwineable" discussion. After all, it's DVM's call not ours here at the M.A. Forum. Personally, I think in a few years, the state DMV's will give a serious look at the Moped classification, particular for the "new scooters" for the reasons we are discussing, i.e. speed, and guess what - - they'll probably come up w/a "new" classification system (based on engine size & speed, which is what they use here in VA now). Dah, go figure.
See ya, Rich - - just geezing along on the PUCH.
I just got a Kinetic TFR and the engine makes a funny ringing sound at 16 mph that sounds like it's coming from the fuel tank area. It doesn't make the sound above or below this speed. Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be happening? I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks!
Aloha, I have 16! Yamaha Vino's, and a few Vespas also. You can make yor Vino go 40+mph w/o being louder, (their quiet speed is a bonus), for absolutely no cost, and in a half hour. No bull! But be careful, they will be VERY "quick"
Say,Dave! Does this mod. just work on Vinos,or is it available for other scooters or mopeds? Tell us about it,please.THANKS !!
It will work on any Yamaha Jog or Spree motor for certain, as well as on the Derbi engines. probably many more also, but especially well mon the Jog, etc. Just take of the 4 bolts holding the exhaust, place the flange end up into a vise, etc. and carefully expand the exhaust bore be 6-8m.m. That's it! Also, make it or any auto mix 2-stroke motor run cooler, better with "Synergyn" oil. It'll blow your mind.
