Speedometer cable and Rear wheel

Two problems/questions

1) How do you get speedometer cable off the wheel thing it connects too, It comes off the speedometer guage easily by pulling it off but I don't know how to get it off the wheel. (I did unscrew the nuts)

2) I have to tighten my chain, but one of the rear nuts just won't come off, and I'm afraid it will strip if I actually get it off, any suggestions. If it strips I'm screwed. Like the pedal on one of my cranks, it was so tight, when I got it off, it was stripped. Do you think I should just leave it alone? The chain is loose but not seriously loose that it would come off or anything.

Try tightening the other rear axle nut then loosen the one you say is stuck. The rear axle is not held on by anything except the axle nuts, sometimes you have to loosen them in stages to get both of them off. I'd have to see the drive unit to be able to tell you how to take your speedometer cable off, usually it's just a knurled nut that's over the cable.

Yea I unscrewed that, you can see the little brass cable going in, but it won't come out, maybe its stuck?

You said it comes off the speedometer so just thread your cable out of the cabling between the front forks, make a diagram of how it's routed prior to taking it out so you'll know how it goes back. Remove the front wheel with the cable attached then take off the threaded spacer that goes between the forks and the drive unit. Now remove the drive/cable assembly and have a close look at it to determine what's holding it on. If it's working, don't break it trying to get the cable off, I'm assuming your just trying to get the front wheel off to fix a flat or put new tires on. You've accomplished that, now just put it back together and let sleeping dogs lay.

It looks like Brian lost the thread here. : )

Speedo cables do sometimes get stuck in the drive unit or speedo. Some drive units are designed to work in either direction and have two ends into which you can put the cable. If yours is this type, there will be a plastic cap on the drive unit in line with where the cable goes in. If you have this, remove the cap and see if you can tap the cable out with a pin punch.

If it is not, dis-assemble it as Brian sugested and see if there is a circlip or something similar holding the drive worm in place. You may be able to remove the worm and get a punch in the other end of it.

As for the wheel nut, make sure none of the exposed threads are screwed up, then remove the nut.

If you do strip it, either buy an axle or have a local shop cut a size smaller thread.

Sooner or later, you will have to adjust the chain or risk a rear wheel lock up.

When you replace the wheel, be gentle with the wheel nuts.

You will recognize it when it happens, from your prone position on the pavement you will observe, from some distance, that the drive chain is wrapped around the rear wheel hub, taking a few spokes with it. : )

Ron, that is so descriptive it has to be knowledge accumulated firsthand! By the way,Nick, I had the end of a TATUNG speedo cable stick in one of my bikes the other day.I just sprayed some carb cleaner in it tyo loosen the grime and gave my wife a hammer.(Ree's percussive maintenance,you see).Then I stood the `ped almost upright on it's rear tire and had her apply the percussive maintenance and the end piece fell right out.Then I just re-oiled the speedo drive and installed the new cable.These are light percussive maintenances you understand.
