vespa ciao problems??

The part that is attached to the fly wheel does not turn when peddeling? Not sure what it is called, looks like a brake drum, the 3 outer pads are not that worn out. They dont grab the outer housing to turn the flywheel. They worked before i took the unit apart,,, Please help!!!

Re: vespa ciao problems??

Vespas have two clutches. The one you mention is the drive clutch. The one on the inside is the starter clutch. That's the one that is aparently causing the problem. Make sure you doin't install it upside down, or it will only work in REVERSE.

Re: vespa ciao problems??

no it is not in the peddle only mode.i think that with the help of jim c ,that the inner set of clutches grab the under side of the housing that the set of 3 clutches is attached to.but i still cant get the two inner clutches to engage , they are not worn out and move freely, the unit worked fine before i removed it,i' am sure that my re-install was exact. THANKS for the HELP!!

Re: vespa ciao problems??

also! when i removed the head there was no gasket, should i use a caulk-based gasket on my ciao??

Re: vespa ciao problems??

john if you are loosing compression you'll never get the outer clutch to turn. maybe your decompressor valve is not closing all the way. without a headgasket you are bound to have a leak but i can't help you with the question about the gasket.i know on mine i have to peddle like hell to start it. is the pulley belt turning when you peddle? check your compression and peddle faster. let me know how you're making out. rory

Re: vespa ciao problems??

john have you ever scene a list of ciao serial numbers to tell the year of a moped. rory

Ron Brown /

John,

I wish I had seen one of these so I could help. All I can say is that every time I have taken something which worked apart and it did not work after I re-assembled it, I was sure that I screwed up and I was usually right.

Re: vespa ciao problems??

John,

There is no head gasket on a Piaggio (Vespa) Ciao. I was confused when I first removed mine, but a look at p. 17 of the Haynes shop manual clears it up: "The cylinder head can now be lifted off, noting that no head gasket is fitted."

Rory,

I have two Ciao's (a 74 and a 76). Contact me off list (just respond to this post and I'll be eMailed the message) and I'll send you the serial numbers. Perhaps they will help?

Chris
