CLOSE CALL!!

gimmyjimmy /

I'm out riding my street bike this morning with my 10 yr. old son on the back,

we came up on this pick up truck hauling a load of fresh cut hay bales. I backed off a little because of all the dust and hay flying all over (doing about 45mph) and let the truck get some distance.

About a mile down the road, a bale on top BLEW off and started to bounce down the road in front of me. I was hard on the brakes, swerving away from the direction I thought the bale was going. This road had no shoulders and there was a car right on my ass, I felt my son's grip on me tighten.

That damn bale was bouncing like a big green football, all over the place. It finally came to rest in the middle of the road, luckily the twine held it in one piece.

I went around it on the right and layed on the horn, (I have an air horn on my Harley) and the dumb ass pick up driver pulls a U turn in front of a telephone truck to go back and get it.

He could'nt do the U turn because there wasn't any shoulders, so he backs up in my lane, and pulls forward. I'm screaming at him, SECURE YOUR LOAD, YOU DUMB SONOVABITCH!!! , and I look, and he's on the friggin cell phone!

I think if my son wasn't with me, I'd go back and make him eat that bale.

A quarter mile down road I came up on a stop sign and I'm asking my boy if he's ok, I felt bad for cussing in front of him, and then, the car behind me blows the horn, scares the sheet out of me. I look back and an old woman sticks her head out the window and asks if I'm alright (she saw it all) I nodded to her and went on our way.

When we got home I gave my son a long hug, thinking of what could have happened. I know this has nothing to do with mopeds, but it's another of life's lessons. We are not on this planet very long, and there some idiot drivers that will make that time even shorter. Enjoy your time here.

Tomorrow, I'll ask my son if he wants to go for another ride.

P.S.

Any truck drivers out there.... cover/tie the load.

That was a close call. I'm glad that you swerved the bale of hay and you and your son are ok. Where I moved to, Mc Henry, there are people that haul hay in tall opened trailers, but they go very slow. Like 20-30mph on 45 or even 55mph roads. Other drivers try to pass them while I enjoy ride at a slower speed. There are farmers too that drive tractors on the roads but I haven't got stuck behind them yet in my moped yet(once in my truck). I wish there could be slower roads out there for mopeds. Kind of like a bike line, or even share bike lanes but you would have to obey a certain speed limit. If roads like those could be built all over the US...there would be no limit where you could ride and it would be much safer than being on the regular roads w/ these idiots. I have to take a road to and from work that goes up to 55mph each day(drops down very shortly though to 45mph then 35mph). Drive safe and always be alert.

BTW were you and your son both wearing helmets?

yes, we always wear lids. The guy in the pick up was no farmer, and it wasn't a work truck, just some jerk in a hurry to hay to his horse probably.

I woulda made sure my kid was ok, dropped him off back at the house......

And then found that driver and made him eat the Bale AND the freakin cellphone.

I really, really hate that......especially given the irony here.

Sunday while returning from Ann Arbor, got caught behind a truck fulla haybales with two kids in the back seat of the car in the usual michigan-madness traffic, and when those unsecured bales started wobbling - I went AROUND this jerk, and what's he doin ? Guess.

Man was I tempted to go shove that cellphone where his proctologist would have to retrieve it.

I say we lynch the next one.

Cellphones are Evil.

Yeah, cell phones suck. We just banned em in New York. I wonder if it will make a difference...

Probably not - but you'll get a kick out of this.

Back in Baltimore I had some joker nearly hit me while I was stopped at a red light, and he pulled to the side of the lane to avoid doing so, and so he was beside my moped....and I noticed his door wasn't locked.

Yanked it open and snatched his cellphone, told him he could get it back from the desk sergeant of the local police station, cause he SURE wasn't gettin it back from me.

Being a yuppie executroid, he quickly evaluated his chances of taking the phone from me (like, nonexistant), and took off, as the light had changed during our "discussion".

True to my word, I dropped the phone off with the local PD's Desk Officer, along with a pointed hint that the owner could use a stern lecture on the subject of paying attention to what he's doin.

Now that's not to say having a cellphone in the car is unilaterally bad, cause we did find a very appropriate use for my roommates, coming back from Detroit one night.

We wound up behind a guy who was quite obviously three-sheets-to-the-wind drunk, and rung on the State Police, and gave em tag number, description, and mile marker, and when he finally pulled off we called em back and gave em the exit he took...I hope they caught him, too - DWI is about as stupid and dangerous as it gets.

So the infernal things do have their uses, but like any good tool, it's far more prone to misuse and abuse than it's intended service.

Re: CLOSE CALL!!

had i been that guy and you reached to my door to open it i woulda got out the car and slit the tires on your moped and proceed to beat your head against the pavement. noone touches anything of mine assholes.

Re: CLOSE CALL!!

Reeperette /

If you should nearly hit me cause yer payin attention to your cellphone instead of your driving, which you should not be....and I decide to make an issue of it with you, you are of course welcome to try that.

How do you think WE feel about being cut off and otherwise pushed around on the road we have as much right to as you do, by folks like you ?

The reason why over a quarter of my body is made outta metal and plastic is cause of folks like you who seem to think they have the right to do as they please out there and be damned to anyone else...and to be frank, I have no qualms about hurting people like that or damaging their vehicles.

My unfortunate presumption here, is that most of our readers had the fuckin sense not to drive with a cell phone stuck to their head, but I guess, stupidity, like competence, is a potentially infinate thing.

If you should happen to be in my neck of the woods are see a big red Targa (I own the only one in about 25 miles), and have a burning desire to really make an issue...feel free, we can "discuss" it in proper testosterone-overload barbaric fashion if you so desire...it makes no real difference to me.

yeah Ree. kick his punk ass, and then call him an ambulance with HIS cell phone.

Re: CLOSE CALL!!

am i the only one who doesnt think cell-phones suck? I have a headset attachment for my nokia on my helmet. And it automatically answers any calls that comes in. My phone is strapped onto the dash of my Targa. I personally think it is ok to use the phone when driving, riding, just as long as you are careful, and if possible have a hands free kit.

Re: CLOSE CALL!!

nah, cell phones don't suck, they are the tools of today. (hands free if your driving), as you know, many states are banning the use while driving and more states to follow.

There is probably a car maker designing a phone in the steering wheel (probably is one already!) but I think calls while you are operating a vehicle should be brief, extended conversations can be distracting to your driving.

hell, before cell phones, it was the CB radios in the cars and trucks. Range was limited, but you could talk to anybody you passed on the road, you can't do that with a cell. Those calls were short because you would driving out of range, (unless you were traveling in the same direction) but you still had to take your hand off the steering wheel to key the mike.... breaker, breaker, one nine!

10-4

I think CBs are making a comeback, alot of kids around here are using them when they're out cruising, airtime is FREE! (more money for CDs, clothes, or save up for that moped)
