Throtle cable- 78 Sears Free Spirit

J.J.Slayback /

Does anyone have a throtle cable that might possibly fit a 78' Sears Free Spirit (made by Puch)Or do you have any ideas where I could get one?The yamaha shop in our town gave me this so called Universal cable, well it half ass fit an my ped only goes 15mph now! It usually goes between 25-28m.p.h. Another question, Im selling this bike to my freind casey in Missouri soon and assuming I get the cable fixed is 300$ to much to ask? I dont want my fist transaction on moped army to be a sour one! I just dont wanna rip people off and I'm not to knowledgable on prices. Thanks, Jeremiah Slayback

If you don't mind ordering online, there's a whole list of online parts dealers in the resources section of this website (called "recommended moped shops" i think). Either that, or with the cable you've got, it sound like it's just too long and there's too much slack in it, causing it to not open the throttle all the way. Put a spacer between the cable's tube and the cable tube attached to the carb (basically making the cable tube longer). But if you want to order over the internet, I always go with www.themopedjunkyard.com because they can have the part at your front door in less than a week.

Too much slack might be my problem, im pretty much a fool when it comes to mechanics! Thanks for responding! -----Jeremiah Slayback--- P.S. hows it goin in N/S/ Dakota? any new moped finds?

Things are fine in South Dakota. You know, strikes and gutters, ups and downs.

I just picked up a 79 Puch Maxi MKII from Clara City, Minnesota. I got it off Ebay for 455 bucks. A little steep, but I've got plans for that two speed transmission. It ran for about an hour when I got it home. It needs a new float in the carburator (got one on the way, should be here by friday) but when it was running, it pulled wheelies in first gear with relative ease. Big fun!

Well, the puch that I just got, and a 77 Puch Newport I got about half a year ago, and an AMF Roadmaster that I've had for about 5 years. It's in need of a carburator, though, and it's hard to find parts for. It's kind of a wierd moped. The engine sits over the back tire and it has a friction drive wheel instead of a chain. I've also got a Go-ped, which looks like a skateboard with handlebars and a motor (so it's not actually a moped, just a toy that's scary as hell to ride :)

And, hopefully, the collection grows...

FYI: Cables

Mountain Bike cables make great (cheap) replacements for most moped cables. Sometimes you have to grind the lead bead down to fit your job.

Thanks for the advice!

I use bicycle brake or derailer cables for that kind of thing. You can get them for a couple of dollars at any store that sells bicycles. Just cut them down to the right length.

Chris.
