Tomos Questions

Wayne Broderick /

A few information requests... Please!

1. Please name the best repair guide for a Tomos-- I want to learn to do everything on my bike.

2. How tough is the jet replacement on the carb? (2000 targa) Can I do it w/o the manual? I've replaced the throttle cable-- that went ok.

3. has anyone had any experience with the piston kits?

4. I asked before, and someone suggested "Mark's Mopeds" I've had great service from Mark's--But...I wanted to ask again.... Is there a 'best' place to find aftermarket parts?

Stuff like:

better shocks...

cool tires w/agressive treads...

etc etc...

5. Which of the guides on the Moped Army site has the best info on fine tuning an engine? (Targa)

Thanks a million. I'm looking for older peds now, so I can have a vintage ride.

I would like to do a bunch of upgrades and learn how to wrench at the same time.

We have long winters in Maine, and I plan on doing a lot of modifications...

Me...but beyond that, I dunno, basic shop manual should work, if you can find one.

>>2. How tough is the jet replacement on the carb? (2000 targa) Can I do it w/o the manual?<<

Tougher than most bikes...gotta dismount the trans, disconnect and pull the carb to get to it, but if you really, really know what yer doin it's an 8-10 minute job...#49-#53 is reccomended.

Some..pain in the ass, but that's the price of power, yannow.

Best make REAL sure you have an A5 Engine afore you try it.

Not really, tho Mopedjunkyard comes closest...I reccomend Cheng Shin tires.

>>5. Which of the guides on the Moped Army site has the best info on fine tuning an engine? (Targa)<<

Use Fred's guide...it's the best, hands-down.

Anythin Tomos specific...howl and I will get to it sooner or later.

Re: A-5

Wayne Broderick /

I'm not certain, but I think it's an A-35.

Yes...I just checked a few web pages.. they all refer to the 2000 targa as:

"A35 engine (exclusive Tomos design)"

Thanks!

Re: A-5

The "A35" Engine is a misnomer, actually...one of the only screwups Tomos ever made, but man it was a doozie.

A3 Engine - Hexagonal Cylinder, 38mm Piston, 10mm Gudgeon Pin, Shorter Piston arm/stroke....Slightly longer transmission.

A5 Engine - Square Cylinder, 38mm Piston, 12mm Gudgeon Pin, Longer Piston arm/stroke....smaller transmission.

Originally Tomos had (apparently) planned to mate the A5 engine to the A3 Trans or vice versa, and all the damn documentation is labelled "A35", even some of the stickers on the mopeds themselves....but no "A35"s were ever in fact, built.

It's either an A3 or an A5...and best make sure it's an A5 (square cylinder) before trying to mount the kit, or it's an invitation to disaster.

You could mount the kit to an A3, but you'd have to replace the stock pistonarm assembly with one from an A5 to do it.

Hope that helps some.

Oh...and if the kit just kinda makes you concerned....you could try getting the 38.5mm Overbore cylinder, piston and rings....Tomos does make em, don't let any sales clerk tell ya different, cause I used the 38.5's with all my old A3's.

Re: A-5

Ree,

Can I tell which type without pulling it apart?

Do you know if you can tell the engine type by year,,,Or were there some 2000 targas made w A3 and some w/ A5 ? (ouch!)

Thanks again--

Re: A-5

Wayne, I can almost guarantee that it's an A5, from my little knowledge about Tomos peds. I think the A3 was only used up until about the early 90's maybe, before the targas and sprints, when they were the "Bullet". But like I said I know little about these machines so don't take my word for it. Hope this helps.
