Five Star General

Rob Hoehn /

Per some of your advice, I went out and bought the General. It is really sweet ride, but needs a bit of work. I think a few wires are either missing, or not connected. Anybody know where I can get a wiring diagram for this thing?? I am going to start by replacing the sparkplug wire, which seems to be the classic problem with mopeds...

Re: Five Star General

what kind of engine do you have? we've seen generals w/ minarelli, morini, and sachs engines. they're wired differently.

This one says 'Moto Minarelli' on the side. Oh and it is a 1980. Thanks.

Re: Five Star General

Rob,save yourself some grief and order a shop manual from MOPEDWAREHOUSE or somewhere. You won't regret it! BYE!

Re: Five Star General

hey rob, did you ever get the winkers fixed

Re: Five Star General

Yes. They work great now. Winkers are for wussies though.

Re: Five Star General

i wouldn't bother with the wiring. my general runs just two wires from the magneto to the headlight and then back to the taillight, but i hardly use them. i usually just ride stealth when i'm on the go. the lights use up a lot of gas and i'm into saving gas that's why i have a moped.

Re: Five Star General

the light doesnt sucks gaz....

anyone can confirm?

Re: Five Star General

now i'm confused too.

Re: Five Star General

i use LEDs. brighter than incandescent and even more fuel economy

Re: Five Star General

wtf... please someone explain me what's the deal with lights sucking gaz...

i dont understand the point...

the magnet stays there and everything... there is as much resistance if you use the light or not...

Re: Five Star General

No,they don't suck gas.........if they did, you'd hear your engine change rpm every time you turned on your headlights on these older `peds(newer ones you can't turn off lights). They take VERY LITTLE power and you should NEVER run without them unless you're completely AWAY from any traffic. don-ohio (:^D

Generating electricity does consume power from your engine but we are only talking about < 50 watts. Joew could probably do the math if he has the time. Jim.

Re: Five Star General

i was using halogens but then my bike would only got 22mph getting 35mpg. before with the 86cc kit it was going 51mph and getting 72mpg

Re: Five Star General

what?

a moped shouldn't run at lower effficiency because of lights.

it definitely won't go slower.

it definitely won't suck gas.

huh?

my head hurts.

the point is that on the little motor, the engine is generating that electricity already. it doesn't change if you don't use the lights. it has seperate coils for engine spark and lighting. it's already generating power for the lights, and it will comtinue to do so if you have them on or not.

I'd say you have a wiring problem if you're getting 22 miles an hour with the lights on and 51 without.

Re: Five Star General

It surely shouldn't sap 5hp out of the bike. If it did. My bike would be a rocket with the lights turned off. And I don't notice any difference.

Jason, have you ever been around a portable generator? If yoy have you would hear the motor change each time a light, tool etc is plugged into it. when the governor kicks in, you will another change. The governor is opening the throttle to keep the rpms up. Opening the throttle burns more gas but lights will not affect a moped much. Jim.

hey rob, did you ever get the winkers fixed

Brett,It started years ago but Angus brought it back with the above question which created more questions.Jim.

Re: Five Star General

lol, no, but now i feel silly,,,,,,,

Re: Five Star General

yeah but what was the original question anyways

"did you ever get the winkers fixed"

what the hell does that mean?

seems like some sort of odd inside joke if you ask me

Re: Five Star General

winker = blinker

Re: Five Star General

aaahhh,

i see

why use blinkers, when you can use your hands

Re: Five Star General

you winker you brought her

Re: Five Star General

I get 14 more if I keep my left signal on at all times, but only if I take the bulb out.

Re: Five Star General

my tailight wasnt working properly tonight, but if i slightly squeezed the brake the brake light came on, so i rode like that all the way home
