Type of Batavus engine. These engines can be found on Batavus Starflites, HS-50's, MoBats, and Intercycles. It seems to be the more common Batavus engine compared to the M56. It also seems more favorable to modify because it has more "room" for improvement. The placement of the intake and carb leaves ample space for upgrade.

Disassemble

After all components (clutch, magneto/flywheel, cylinder head, cylinder, piston, and the six case screws) have been removed off of the engine find yourself a rubber mallet, an oven, some floor space, and 15 minutes to spare.

  1. Turn oven to 225°
  2. Set timer for 15minutes.
  3. Place engine case in oven.
  4. Wait.
  5. When timer goes off pull case out of over, whack the crank ends (Flywheel or Clutch) until one half of case falls off (Ussually taking the crank with it), pick up other half and whack the rest of the crank out. Be gentle! It'll break.

Belt replacement

As per the Batavus HS-50, page, the M48 engine uses a Gates 9319, Dayco 17320, Goodyear 17321 or metric # 13A0815 belt, available at your local automotive or tractor supply store.

For replacement of the belt on the M56 engine, see M56 drive belts.
