Cooper - I assume you made that shim out of steel since you welded it in?
No doubt it's a really good idea, and I might end up going with it. What about making it out of aluminum though, and then attaching it with short countersunk or set screws from the outside of the bell? It would be so much lighter, not to mention easier to fabricate.
