Umm the points run off a lobe on the crankshaft, its relative to the position of the piston in the cylinder. I'm not sure what you are asking here.
As for points, they do float, its a mechanism, for the most part people dont turn 13K rpm, at a certain point the mechanism cant keep up with the rotation of the crankshaft. I understand why people like the cdi's for racing. But I dont see any real advantage if you arent racing. The points last a long time, if you keep the cover on, they wont get all that dirty and you dont have to worry about your thrystor or whatever the fuck jawa called it, going out.
A good example:
Try finding a vintage stereo reciever, its purely mechanical. Now find a new stereo reciever, its almost all circuit boards. I can fix the old style..the new style well if a resistor or capacitor goes out on the board, good luck fixing that without replacing half of the components or the most expensive parts, circuit boards...
