Re: Dirtbike forks..
I had a couple of bare toptank frames needing forks. Finding a 35 year old General or Lazer hydraulic fork that wasn't pitted was tougher than just going to the junkyardyard 15 mins away and paying $25 for the complete frontend from handlebar to wheel . Also, like I said it's a bolt-on already complete with a 17" x 1.4" wheel- drum or disk with sealed bearings. You can even convert to tapered roller headset bearings eliminating loose balls. Even the tree is the correct length .The cable operated dirtbike drum setup is larger than the tiny General drum (which is even smaller than a Puch's ).Try twisting the wheel and handle bar back and forth of the General (or any Moped )and twisting a dirtbike setup - huge difference which to me translates to better stability at speed. I mean dirtbike forks are meant to be beaten and abused .Fork seals, bearing seals and brake pad ,cables or shoes are down the street at any cycle shop. Why would you not want to use them if you can't find originals??
Here's a table for fork tube sizes and what years to look for.
