The top crank is the D.
and the diffrence between a C and D cylinder, and why I think it's easier to call them the "square" cylinder.

The difference is... one came on a D and one came on a C. they are the same. Ports are the same, bolt pattern is the same, the difference is the crank. The one on the left is off a 505 D motor, and the one on the right came off a 504 C motor.
There is a later sachs cylinder that I haven't gotten my greasy digits on.
but it's on later bikes.
