Re: vespa owners: belt compliaton thread
my experiences:
A belts slip most, impossible to start as soon as it wears in, at least with malossi weights, read below. once started works ok but wrong angle so rides on shoulder only so shreds fast.
4L belts slip less, but still wrong angle so wear.
heavy duty version (green with W at the end) lasted longer, but at $15 its twice as much as both above and almost as much as the vari vespa belts below.
vespa ciao belt from zippymopedparts: Pirelli premium (new one also says it's made by dayco in italy), #2632 (ciao/kinetic length), little bit wider (13mm vs 1/2"), not as fat vertically, works much better and wears evenly and slower. variates better, higher top speed.
proper malossi belt, #617227 (ciao/kinetic length), marginally wider than pirelli, best in my experience.
Tired of your bike being impossible to start? LeoVince 13x16mm roller weights, green plastic and metal mass, are a little big larger than the malossi ones so the vari holds the belt tighter, helping grip enough to start pretty easy even with the napa A and 4L belts, also makes it push the belt out at max vari just that little bit more.
Shredding belts? Take apart the rear pulley and polish up the pulley cheeks, don't run them rusty and pitted. While You're at it sand the edges down so they're not so rough. Run a cheap napa belt for a little while to finish polishing, and also after storing the bike anywhere at all damp to polish off any corrosion before running your nice expensive belt.
