Re: Chain Lube: wax vs oil

Motorbike chain breaker, definitely. The only bicycle breakers that work are the REALLY cheap ones that only have two prongs (instead of four), but those break easily because they're made out of cheap metal.

Anyway, 8,000 miles (really?) is good for a chain. If you were satisfied with that chain up until you replaced it, just keep doing whatever it is that you were doing.

Otherwise, you actually use both wax and oil. Spray oil (probably chain oil, like in the aerosol can) on your chain regularly, and wipe off the excess. Then, every insert-number-of-miles-here miles, take the whole thing off, clean it, and dip it in hot wax.

Wax is good because it fills up the spaces between the pins and bushings (instead of filling the same space with dirt). Hot wax solidifies inside the chain, and takes a while to come out - doing this makes your chain "stretch" less (doesn't really stretch, just wears), and thus last longer.

Some people say that you should mix the wax you're dipping your chain in with oil. I actually do this ('cause, why not).

I don't think that this actually does any good. When you spray oil on the outside, a bit gets into the rollers anyhow - the wax is really just there to take up space that would otherwise be filled with dust and road grit.
