You don't need to lube your chain once a week unless you are riding a ton of miles. But you do need to replace your chain more often than 8000 miles. The most important factor in chain life is proper tension. And the most important factors in sprocket life are proper chain tension and replacing the chain once its worn. If you let the chain go bad it will ruin your sprockets in short order.
