went to a local peace rally!! (Maine!)
What a downer. Geez, I can see why there's this perception of the "peaceniks" being loonies.
There was about 120 bike riders, and they took over the streets blocking most of the traffic. They did a few laps---they all had signs and shirts...... yes it was a pain in the ass for cars, but I thought it was pretty cool.
I brought up the rear on the QT-50, so no "real" vehicles could try to mow the bikers down.....so I was a part but in a subtle way.
BUT when I got to monument square some kids had vandalized the monument--- very disrespectful. Most of the kids there were very 'alternative' there were a few bums too, but they probably wanted to fee llike a part of a group.
an impromptu support our troops group formed on the corner across from the square. I wanted to go there too. I support a grunt more than anyone---during gulf W#1 I had two pen pals---a reservist cop who went and another of my dad's friends.
I stayed with the peace kids, they didn't do anything bad while I was there, but to a 'conservative soccer mom' stuck in traffic or passing the square would have seen nothing but frustrated X-ers...
the news was all about the vandalism of the statue and no footage of the big bike ride (I saw them filming!) I stayed in the square for about 30 mins, until the police showed up. I was playing classical war music (sabre dance, flight of the valkyries) they thought that was cool.
and, they all wanted to honk the air horn!! like the experience of pressing the button was SO cool (is that how bush feels???)
one potential Mo-Babe came right up and asked where she could get one (a mint 1982 qt-50??) I told her it was tough and to buy the first machine new. but I told her how to find them too etc. She was cute---she had 32mm holes in her ears. WOW, that was sexy.
I had to keep mentioning my wife----WE ride mopeds together...my wife and I.... She totally thought I was cute, must have been the moped. A nice tongue piercing.... wow. I gotta get contact cards made up for people who want to connect, even if they don't have a ride yet.
Course, I didn't want some rave girl calling and asking for me either...haha, I should loop the wife in on my plans.
When I told her a cute peace really girl was giving me the eye she said "she was obviously crazy---I'm the only normal woman you've ever dated....."
My wife, she knows me well. I didn't see the vandalism, but that's the kind of thing that blows the goodness out of any rally. I left when the police put the first guy into the van.....cuffing him for sitting on the edge of the monument....where tourists, everyone sit all year long. I wonder if they'll enforce that rule at any time other than a peace rally.
it was vandalized though....I'm going back today but it looked like they dug through the polished surface of the granite. Assinine move, but I wonder (knowing the location of the square) how someone got away with it with the place crawling with police.
a girl was juggling little flaming circus batons---she was good. The ambulance, hazmat van and two fire trucks showed up.
wow. Police state 2003. Portland Maine meets the NWO.
haha, I was just saying I'd never gone to a single rally because of the worry of getting arrested for nothing. I'm glad I left when the paddywagon showed up.
Just FYI on Maine. Not many 'normal' folks--- it was a totally alternative crowd.....lots of piercings funky clothes....plus all the bikers. Some of the girls had really cool retro 3-speeds.
it was fun. They're going to gather more and more each night I guess.
