A word about tank rust...
I have a Puch Maxi with one of the rustiest gas tanks that I've ever seen. As I've done with other rusty tanks, I used a combination of Behrs Concrete Etcher (Phosphoric acid) and hot water to remove the rust. Because the rust was so bad, I had to soak it twice. However, the second time around, I used a much higher concentration of Behrs to water and let it sit in the tank for around 4 days. When I flushed it out today, the inside of the tank looked like new. I filled the tank with baking soda and water to neutralize any residual rust and then flushed it out until the water flowed clean.
The moral of the story is....if you have a gas tank that is really rusty, don't give up on it. Be patient and let the Behrs work.
