re-covering Motomarina Sebring seat

I have a new seat cover for my 85 Sebring. Without taking the old cover off, I have kind of placed the new cover over it. It seems pretty small for the seat. I guess it hasto be tight, but I cant see being able to get it to fit over the foam. Has anyone re-covered one of these? Is it possible that the cover will only work on newer Sebrings.
