Moped Army

I've read various places about mopeds having a general lifespan of 9000 miles, if maintained properly. Isn't that rather low? 14400 kms. I could barely drive across the country and return at that. How many miles or kilometres do mopeds normally last? And is it mainly the engine that wears out? Thanks :)
