What do you suggest?

Joe Stirling (birch) — Dec 14, 2002 11:53PM

Hi

I'm looking to get my first moped, but I'm not sure what to go hunting for. Maybe someone could give suggestions on what would be appropriate for me.

I want to use the moped predominantly for crosscity riding, but also for the occasional multi day camping trip. So it has to be able to carry panniers, and I don't want to have to bring a whole tool box with me. In other words, it needs to be really dependable. I can't stress that enough.

Since I live in Ontario, it needs to have pedals, be under 50cc, and max out at 50 km/h (before mods wink).

A lighter moped would be nice so that I can use more body english when maneuvering. But not so light that it's a underpowered or flimsy ride. In fact I'd rather not ride one with loose handling because I'm used to tight handling on my bicycles. But if it's a real sweet ride then I'd be willing to have a longer rake on the fork, etc.

After going through the pictures in the photogallery here I think I prefer pre 80s mopeds. After that the manufacturers seemed to lose their funk. Of course there are exceptions. But if I go too old, the price will rise, too new, again that price. So maybe a mid-late 70s machine.

Of course, I need to consider what's available, but I can at least pick out which moped I REALLY want (and can REALLY afford), then see if I can find it.

So, any suggestions??

Joe
