Yeah, if you're looking at the tip of the plug, a mile isn't enough. Sometimes it takes me 5 or 6 miles before I get some color on the tip. Technically you're supposed to check way deep inside the plug (you probably have some color down in there) but I think that a lot of people don't do that. Regardless, you should still probably upjet (order a larger range of sizes than what you've got now, start big and work your way down), especially if you're going to keep running it with the air box off. Does it RUN any better when you take the air box off, or does it only SOUND better? "Sound" is very subjective, and it's hard to judge what the correct sound is if you don't have a lot of experience.
