My best aquisition, what do you think? (pic)
HI everyone.
i posted here a while back about a riga moped i was interested of buying.
I have finally bought it. I asked a guy i knew who lived close to the seller to pick it up for me and to keep it until i could come and get it.
I got it yesterday.
I only had seen one picture of it, but it looked quite nice and PRETTY rare... i think it's kind of unique...
I attached a picture of the moped.
this side is the side i couldnt see on the picture before to buy it. The gaz tank is prety scratched on that side.
The moped is AWSOME, it also comes with owners manual, and some spare parts, which i dont have yet because the guy wasnt home when i picked up the moped,i'll have to go get them someday.. the moped was in his backyard with a tarp over it.
The moped is pretty strange compared to other mopeds. It comes from Russia, which was called USSR, it's a 1975 model.
Major differences are that the moped has VERY small plastic quantity. Only the airbox, the horn switch, the taillight lens and a part of the gaz cap are plastic. Everything else is metal.
Allright, this is not too rare... i agree...
THEN, the moped is a 3speed manual shift moped.
you pedal backward to rear brake, like SOME mopeds.
Then... the petcock valve is almost as big as the carburetor.(see picture)
FINALLY, what's really weird is that the speedo cable readings comes from the ENGINE.
yeah, that's right, i've never saw that before... maybe it's common, but i dont think so... the speedo cable is comming from the engine casing.
The moped has 145KM on it. It doesnt start right now but i know it will easily. The guy did 65km on it last year. It only had 80KM.
The tires are new and original, still had the pins on them. They are common 16 -2.5 tires.
everything seems to work... the lights and the horn works when i'm pedalling.
Now, the bad part:
the engine seems to leak a little bit of oil, i'll have to check... i wouldnt be surprised that the previous owner overfilled the transmission.
There are some minor scratches everywhere and the major ones on the gaz tank.
Also, the inside of the gaztank is pretty rusty.
Now, the little question part:
-What kind of oil should i use in the transmission. I could probably know when i get the owners manual, but have you already tryed to rear RUSSIAN?
-Should i try to get some matching paint and repair the major scratches on the gaz tank? I'm thinking of bringing the tank to a paint shop and make them make me matching color.
-I'll use the search feature of this site to find a way to remore my gaztank rust, but do you think i should buy a kit made especially for this? I would prefer not to have a coat of stuff inside the tank, i would like the inside to be shiny. I'll try coca-cola i think.
strange thing is that i looked all over google, and i found several sites about riga mopeds and MC, but i couldn't find any RIGA 12, like mine. The biggest site i saw which was the most complete talked about RIGA11 and riga13, but the 12 seems to be pretty rare. Some places also talk about rige R-12 mopeds, i dont know if that's the samething.
The moped has a strange story, i'll make it short: A canadian guy was an engineer and he had a job to do in the USSR, while he was there, he bought the ped and shipped it here in canada, by container, to his son or daughter, i don't really know. Then, he/she, wasn't really interested, so they garaged it, and time passed. I dont know if they sold it to someone else, but i think so. Then, the owner gave it to the guy that sold it to me in exchange of a welding job he did, the guy's a welder. The welder (the last seller) was moving, and needed to sell the moped. That's why he announced it... price was too high, and time passed, so i made him an offer at the last minute. He really needed to sell the moped before he moved, so i got it.
The guy was asking 1500$US (1875$can) when i saw it announced. 1-2 month later, i offer him 500$CAD, by email. He asks me if i'm serious about that and he gives me his phone number and asks him to call him. I call him a week later, and i asks what price he could let it go... we talked a little and I finally got it down to 325$US (400$can)
I think the moped is a HIGHLY GREAT find, i do not want to brag, but i'm really proud of it.
This is MY baby, and i won't let anyone mess with it :p
after cleaning everything and waxing it greatly, i'm thinking of bringing it down in my basement near my computer, so humidity and weather won't damage it. It also would make a great decoration. :D
I still have to discuss about it with my parents... they aren't too pleased about this idea.
I think it would look cool in my coca-cola decorated computer room.
Ouch, i think that's my longest post ever. Congratulations if you completly read it. I'm waiting for your comments.
