hey everyone, i just found this site and all the info has been really helpful. ive done some searches and i know that ciaos come up quite a bit so sorry if im being redundant.

so yeah, i have a 78 vespa ciao with a total of ~270 miles on it and enjoy riding except for the fact that i wish it was a bit faster. i can get it up to 27mph but would like for it to go maybe 5mph faster if possible.

so ok, money is not really much of a factor as much as my limited experience with working with engines. ive checked out 50cc.nl and have decided to get a cylinder kit, muffler, and carb.

cylinder kit:
70cc malossi is what i want here, right? just that there are three different ones. im not sure what a 10 pin vs. a 12 pin is. if someone could tell me the part number that would work best, that would be great. all im looking for is something i can bolt on without a lot of hassle… im really not experienced to do any kind of engine mods/casework.

muffler:
again, my main concern is just bolting the thing on straight. is this even possible? my welding skills are lacking.

also, ive read from you guys that the polini long is lacking in performance… should i go with the proma circuit? im not looking for anything fancy, just something that will bolt on straight and wont be huge and stick out at some weird angle or something.

carb:
obv im going with the 13mm dellorto as its my only option shown. is this going to improve my performance from stock? is it even worth it? also, i will probably have to rejet it, no? what size would you recommend and where can i buy the jets? i dont see them on the site.

other conderations:

im worried that an increase in horsepower might cause strain on the clutch. anyone know where i could get a high performance one. if not, for the time being would getting new clutch springs do any good?

last thing- i see they also sell different sized drivebelt pulleys. im not sure what the stock size is but do most of you guys go a little bigger than stock? can anybody recommend a size or should i just keep the one i have. i want to be able to have a good top speed but not so much that i cant handle a decent hill.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

dont know much about ciaos but if you are gonna get a new carb 13mm seems way small. usually when you install cylinder kits you needa take the case apart and grind the transfer ports in the case to match the massive ones on the aftermarket cylinder.

also consider the low mileage may indicate the ped ain’t that well broken in! How old is the belt?27 ain’t bad though….new tranny oil?

13mm dellorto is the largest carb you can fit on a vespa crankcase.

I’m not familiar with the single speed pulleys on the ciao, but I would just buy all the pulleys from 50cc.nl and experiment, I don’t think that they’re that expensive. I think I would prefer the single speed engine to the variator engine because of its ease in tuning.

You will have to read your spark plug to determine the correct jet to use. A 66 is usually stock on a 13mm dellorto. 1977 mopeds sells dellorto jets as well as a performance air filter, I would buy that as well.

I think you ought to seriously consider starting with a polini long, 13mm dellorto and high flow malossi filter before you move to a kit. It might be enough performance to satisfy you, and will require far less work. If you decide to upgrade to the kit later, you’ll already have some experience working on your bike and the pipe and carb upgrade to go with it.

1977 mopeds has the carb, pipe and filter.

This is a good idea for any moped tuner, expecially the inexperienced. try to take the smallest steps possible, and you’ll be much less likely to purchase something you don’t need, break a part on accident, or struggle trying to figure everything out at once.

The 65cc 10pin, under vespa/Ciao on www.50cc.nl is the kit you want, however.

Be careful, I bet your vespa is a 12pin. I think the 10pins vespas started in the 90s and were not imported to the states. I think kinetics are 10 pin because they use the newer engines.

thanks for all the great information, guys.

bret, i think youre right; i should probably just go with the simpler mods first b/c i really have no idea what im doing. id probably just break the damn thing trying to kit it.

im going to purchase the suggested carb, pipe, and air filter. ill rejet and see how that turns out. i might mess around with different sized pulleys later.

ill take pics when im done and check in with the results. thanks again.

oh, by the way… how can i tell whether i have a 10 pin or a 12 pin?

I could be wong about the pin size. You could measure the diameter of your piston wrist pin, but i’m sure someone can just tell us which it is for the older models.

Anyone know about the wristpins? I have a ‘95 Bravo and live in Europe. Would really want to know the story on the wristpins!

odds are good a ‘95 European Bravo has a 10pin. The only way to be sure is pull the cylinder and measure the wrist pin 12mm or 10mm.

Polini Top One pipe, is far better than the long model by the way.

But the carb, high flow filter, and pipe will deff get you to 30 or more.

oh yeah, the 13/13 carb comes with a 66 jet which is probably to big.

I wouldn’t worry about the clutch for now.
