i need help
i have a carb thats needs an air filter, its a 17mm bing
its mounted towards the front of the bike, right behind the front fender, so it needs one bad
i have a k and n filter, but it wont fit because of fender clearence, i have no problem taking the fender off, but i am then worried about dirt and crap getting kicked up into the filter
i tried some uni foam, and it wont work, in fact i have never been able to get uni foam to work well on mopeds, it just doesnt seem to allow enough air into the venturi, so half the time it wont start because its choked way to much, i havent tried uni foam without the filter oil, maybe that would work
what other air filter products are out there?

The convoluted tubing is counterproductive to flow. It’s sole purpose is to cut down intake roar, e.g. negative pressure wave at the mouth of the carb. Brett, I liked your idea of the panty hose, it’s the best of both worlds. Easy to obtain, as far as interupting flow I think it has to be tested. I’ll be purchasing, some panty hose, I’ll save the condoms and cucumbers for a seperate shopping trip

i actually had panty hose on a 14mm bing that i mounted on a minarelli bike,
i finally ordered a neat wierd bing air filter for it, but i couldnt wait for it to come in the mail, so i took panty hose, cut 2 square sections and hose clamped them onto the throat, it worked fine, now that i have some foam filter oil, i may even try some panty hose with that
the only problem is that panty hose looks pretty ghetto on your moped
i definately would rather not have something angled, as right night i kind of have a ram air type thing going on, plus, as jonathon stated, its not the most productive for air flow
the throat of the 17mm bing is very similar to a sha model dellorto, except its a little bigger, its has a large circular opening, so i was also thinking i could get some wire mesh from the hardware store and cut it into circular pieces and try that, infact i worked on an old puch scooter a few months back, it had a 17mm bing, and there was only some metal screen for an air filter,

I use 2 sheets of thin foam oiled with atf. You can kind of see it in this pic. Its only temporary untill I get a uni-filter.

Uni pre-filters also work for that sort of set up. It looks better when you trim it up too.
Excelent for bikes with really tight clearance, like PA50, kinetic and vespa.
some filter oil and you should be really good.

Yea, looks much better after you trim it. How thick is the uni pre-filter foam?

the sheets of uni foam that you can buy from a motorcycle shop are pretty thick, about an inch,
how much would you need grey? i could maybe mail you some, they give you about 2 square feet of it, enough foam to make filters for mopeds for the rest of your life

for starters, don’t use anything PVC near or around your motor. as PVC heats to high temps, it puts out some pretty righteous gas. i don’t know about damage to the motor, but it would seem like over time it could do harm. we found some heavy duty rubber elbows (in the plumbing section of you nieghborhood hardware store) that work unbelievably well. k&n makes filters to fit as well. as to the carb, have you thought about switching to a dellorto? bing has yeilded nothing but problems for me, as they’re OEM on a lot of the old triumph bikes and cars.

the uni pre-filter foam (it came on annother filter) was about a 1/4 inch thick.
I used filter foam oil- really sticky gummy stuff.

I have a minarelli v-1 that doesnt like to have it’s original air cleaner off…I did put an old chrome velocity stack from a motorcycle on it and it ran like shit. I though it was getting too much air, but now i’m reading about intake roar…what is that?
