katelyn, yer gonna love Brodeo. He’s the raddest dude in the whole wide world. Frealz.
Joe, a brand new Tomos could do all of these rides, though slowly. A Stock-Modified variated bike could do all these rides, though slowly. A bone stock single speed bike, not so much. A Single speed non-kit modified bike that someone geared to do 45, not so much. Also, a lot of it has to do with lights. There’s a couple places where if you get stuck behind the red, you better peddle your ass off.

comments:
Joe, put a Kinetic front end on. better forks, better brakes, and I sold Eric one a couple weeks ago. It’s missing the fork brace, but the brakes and wheel and forks are great. Get it.
Harvey, as best as I can tell, we’re looking at 800 feet at the top, via my half assed google search of what I think is the topper most point. And most of it isn’t too secret. If you did the rides from the rally last year, and the anniversary ride (not this year, but 08), then you’ve been on 70% of the west side roads, and at least 50% of the east side roads. We’re just not posting it on the interwebnets because we want it to be exciting.
Nate, call Wayne, Adrian has his number if you don’t. He’s in charge of housing. I think we’re doing reasonably well, but help might be helpful.
Steve, no redbooking.
Chris, I can’t wait to see you here, it’s gonna be awesome.

++++ Friday ride leaves at 7pm, SHARP. Make sure you’re ready to go, as we don’t do group gas stops at the beginning of rides (this goes for all days, btw, we do gas stops in the middle, but assume that everyone is gassed up at the beginning.). Ride leaves from inner SE Friday night.
++++ As far as gearing goes, if your bike is kitted, and isn’t geared for doing 80mph on a 65cc E50, or something like that, you should be fine. The Gear for Torque line, aside from just being something we say all the time, cause we love wheelies, is mostly just a comment to the people that have stock e50s with biturbos that try to get 50 mph out of them by changing their gearing to 700/5 or whatever. Chris, if yer bike handled Gender Bender, you should be at least reasonably okay here. Really, there’s only a handful of parts where stock one speed bikes would be bummed.
And please bring good brakes, as there are numerous locations where if you go around a corner too fast, it’s a 30+ foot drop to your doom. And no one wants that kind of doom.
+++++ Last year was around 120 people. This year, we’re expecting more like 200. It’s gonna be intense.
+++++ If you’re jetted for LA, I would bring some jets. It’s a little cooler here at night, and the Saturday ride is on a road that is notorious for seizing bikes that are already lean. That, and people just race full throttle on it for 5 miles straight, which adds to the seize factor. But hey, they’re mopeds, right? That’s what they’re for.
I think Portland’s pretty damn attractive:

joe, that road is also awesome because there isn’t a lot of places for the chase vehicle to pull off of. when people seize, they’re going to have to walk 1/2 mile or so to the next turn off, adding to the bummerness. But if you DON’T seize, the glory will be yours!

it is NOT on vista or cornell, but if vista and cornell are half that pretty, I’d like to know where they are.
And oh yeah, like you needed another reason, come and win a kitted DERBI VARIANT. Serious. It’s gonna be nuts. The last incarnation of this bike went 60mph, and was torquey as balls. This one might be a bit slower, since we’re putting a 32cc kit on it this time.
okay, the 32cc part was a joke, but really, come win a really sweet Derbi.

a.) that’s both Old Germantown road AND Skyline, it’s where they intersect.
b.) I have no problem with you winning it, I’m just saying, rattle canning it might make it, like, you know, disappear, from your garage.
c.) any of you dudes have a rototiller? or a really awesome lawnmower? we really need to get the dirt track, like, dirt.

Just got some word that Joe may be out of town for the rally so… Los Dorados… I can house a few of you for the weekend. My basement has something like 3 futons in it and it’s real cool down there. I also have a damn fine garage in which to lock bikes. Word. Email me or track me down at the rally.

yay Cuperteens!
QR, if you don’t need a place to stay, or a t-shirt, or a rally pack, then don’t worry too much about registering. It mostly is there to help us make sure we have enough stuff. Being that housing goes to people in gangs first, and then single people that had to fly here, then locals, we might not have housing for you anyway.

because, just like Christmas, I won’t be buying you anything until I find out that you’re getting me something, then I’ll feel bad, and make some shit up at the last second.
To continue this metaphor, maps are like cards, everyone gets one, and they will be adequate, at the worst.

re the earlier post about the bridges/bicycles….
People from out of town may not know/if you end up riding alone: A LOT of the bridges around PDX have huge sections of grating as the deck, not concrete. If you ride over them it’s scary as shit and if you fell would be like a huge fucking cheese grater. Off the top of my head only the Burnside and Hawthorne St bridges are all concrete/safe.

powell (ross island bridge) is way fast, and there’s no way to pull off. Not really recommended. Burnside’s a good one. The grating kind of sucks on the other bridges, but it’s doable. Also, the rally has begun. Straight to Razzout.

Stick with Burnside or the Morrison Bridge is the safest of the bridges with grating. Do not take the ross island or hawthorn bridge or fremont for that matter, unless you like riding on freeways.

Everyone just take the Burnside bridge. Avoid everything else. Simple as that. portland is not super spread out and sprawling, so chances are the Burnside bridge won’t be terribly out of your way.
