I.R.E. rider shot last night

Mark, who is the guy who houses most of our mopeds, and hosts our fix it days/meetings, got shot last night. He is in critical but stable condition right now. Just before 1am he was riding and someone stopped him. They told him to give him his Ciao, and he said no. The proceeded to shoot him in the stomach. The details are fuzzy from there, but as far as we know he has had two surgeries and is still critical but stable.

Some of you met Mark at the KC rally this year. Others met him while stopping through St. Louis at random times. He is the major benefactor to our group, and is one of my best friends.

If you’re the praying type, please keep him in your prayers. If not, please just hope for his speedy recovery.

I never understood the logic behind robbing someone for a moped. They’re not worth much, and they’re hard to sell without drawing big time attention.

I don’t know much other than what I said before. The police towed his ciao home, but I don’t know if they have any leads on the shooter. I know they were in his house around 2:30am last night. No one knew why for sure, but a couple ideas were that they were looking for family contact info, or that they were just checking the place over to make sure no one was there. He didn’t get shot at the fort. He was out riding a bit away from there.

I’ll keep the thread updated with anything we find out, but it’s all pretty vague right now.

Hey Chuck. We’re all kinda lost on what we can do for him ourselves. Neighbors are watching the fort and feeding his dog and cat. I don’t know how our group is going to function for now, nor how Sioux Falls will work out. For now we’re just hanging in there, waiting for more info.

It’s not too clear what happened after he was shot. But the neighbors tell me that the police showed up at his house around 2:30am with the Ciao, and went through his house looking for family contact info. I doubt he rode anywhere after that. Though he might have tried. Mark is a tough old dude.

I still don’t know anything new. I’ll post as soon as I hear anything though. I’m gonna swing by the fort after work and see if the neighbors have any new news.

I knew something was wrong when he didnt reply to my email. He is an awsome guy and I know he will recover. Only a badass would take one in the stomach for a Ciao. I hope he gets better real fast.

To tell you what a nice guy he is, he offered to stop by my parents in STL to pick up my sleeping bag and stuff for the Souix Falls rally. Super great guy and I can only hope he will still be able to go with us to Souix Falls. I know he was excited about it.

He also sent me a puch axle and berings b/c I told him that mine crapped out. It took like 2 days but I didnt expect him to send it to me, he just did without payment. He just said ohh well you can pay me for it when we drive thru KC and pick up your guys peds.

Keep us updated and try and take a laptop to the hospital so at least he can chat with us while being stuck there for a few days.

I’m waiting to hear some definite word on his condition/recovery, and to talk to his wife and see if they want a donation fund dealie setup. But thanks to all you people who’ve volunteered to donate! I’m not sure what their insurance situation is, so they might need help. Even if they have insurance, I’m sure it’s going to be a pricey ordeal.

I’ll start another thread if/when I setup a dropcash account for him.

People stop us all the time telling us to let them ride our peds, and I’m sure he just said no, and totally didn’t expect to get robbed/shot. I mean, who doesn’t get flagged down all the time by people asking questions. Shit could’ve happened to any of us.

Update: Mark underwent a 3rd surgery today and is still critical but stable. He has been under sedation since he got to the ER, but was conscious when found by the EMTs. They’re going to take him out of it tomorrow. I’ll let you all know how that goes. Turns out *13* shots were fired at him, and he dodged 12 of them. The one that hit him went through him lengthwise (side to side rather than front to back) but miraculously missed any vital organs. Far as we know, there are no leads on the ski-masked thug that got him.

I just realized after going through the garage today that it is his green Puch Maxi MKII that is missing. Luckily we have that serial number. It is 1 digit off from my green puch. One of ours was xxxxx8x and the other is xxxxx9x. We’ll get it out of impound. Sorry for the confusion everyone, I thought it was his ciao he was riding. Like I said, details are still fuzzy at this point.

They’re only letting family visit him at this time. He is still sedated, and they’re taking him out of that today. Hopefully he’ll be just fine and can go to a hospital room where outsiders can come by to see him.

I.R.E. Updates:
-Fix it Sundays are going to be at Tom’s house from now on.
-This Saturday or Sunday, if you need to get your mopeds or parts from Mark’s, call me or Tom to set it up. We’re trying to minimize the amount of people going in and out of their place so the family can focus on Mark and not us moped bums.

I’d like to come but am very very busy working on my house in order for either an appraisal to keep it or sell it. I do need to come down for a ft. brake replacement and a clutch soon. One, this whole experience has been amazingly re-affirming as far as humanity goes. There has been such an outpouring of love and support and help from so many corners. One lone, messed up kid with a gun holds nothing compared to all the amazing people I know.
Two, we do have insurance and (I think-hope-oh,god,don’tletthemfuckusoveronthis) we should be pretty well covered for hospital costs.
Three, those who know Mark know that he’s a pretty tough old alley cat—he’ll pull through.

Tom and I are stopping by the house as much as we’re able to around work and such. We’ve offered to do anything and everything they need. Lawnmowing, dishes, cleaning, anything at all to make life easier. And that offer is on the table for as long as it takes for Mark to recover. So as soon as I get word from Danielle that they need help with anything, Tom or I will be sure to let the IRE boys and girls know what needs to be done. I figure it’s easier on his family if they have one or two people they can call rather than a list of 40. You’ll be put to work, don’t worry. :) Yous all got volunteered for work by me before you even knew it. But I knew you’d all offer to help anyways. We’ve got a kick ass gang.

Also, I know everyone has been asking to see him, and I’ll let you know when that’s possible, but it might not be for a while.

They’ve waited until today to take him out of sedation, so me or Danielle will let you all know how that goes.

I’ve gotten home. about 45 lbs lighter. but in one piece.
So I was riding one of my crappy maxi’s around on some south side streets that night. Outta the corner of my eye, I noticed someone trailing me, looked, and it was a little bike,thought it might be a fellow pedder, so I slowed down and stopped. The bike pulled up, its light too bright for a ped, a kid with a fullface said somethin, couldn’t quite make it out,I looked down at the bike, it had a spinner thing on the right side of the bike, kinda baby moon hubcap shaped, that spun behind a collar, My thought was , How hasn’t that been lost already, when I looked back up there was a revolver pointed in my face. What the fuck? you prick? as I did a 180 wheelie, to head opposite, as I lit out, I noticed a rider, which kinda changed my theory of “you can’t throttle and shot with the same hand”, well then it went, 12 shots, evidently 2 guns, no time for reloading, they closed on me quick, I braked hard, turned inside , and they nailed me with a thru shot right at the belly button. The pain was such that I couldn’t control the stop, fell on the bike. They stopped over me, I had lost count, they sped off.

What was the make or type of bike, color?, and this spinner baby moon thing, was it on the wheel or engine? sounds uncommonly custom.
