www.bfyobsoleteparts.com has both the 12 and 6 volt ‘blue’ coils (150:1), as well as stock vw 100:1 ratio coils.
i had her pedal the ped and measured the AC voltage at the coil wires that came off the mag. we got about 4.5 to 6.4 volts as she pedaled slower or faster. based on this i got a 6 volt coil so it would have enough energy when she pedal started the bike.
i went with the bosch coil because its just a coil, theres no fancy prancy crap about multiple sparks, no blasting, etc etc. i’d already seen that i could get spark out of a 12v unit when i hooked it up for testing. finding a stock style VW coil in your voltage wouldnt be hard and theyre pretty cheap if you get them used. the choice of bosch ‘blue’ was because i tend to over-do things. a regular coil would have cost 2/3rds and worked as well.
in open air the CEV coil that came on the ped was able to jump a 1/4 inch gap at pedaling speed with the plug out, the spark was blue with white at either end and looked good.
the blue coil was able to jump a 5/8ths inch gap consistently with a fat wide blue spark, no white at the engines. just wide and blue. a deeper blue than the stock coil and it had a stronger snapping sound.
