so to condense it all down, measure what your voltage at the coil is and match it to the new coil.
yep, did that. got 4-6 volts at idle speeds and went with a 6 volt coil. the AC voltage isnt a problem because of how the points will break the sine wave, just like the off and on of a cars points system or cdi system.
its not so much the point of having more volts/amps, its that more volts/amps allows you to jump a bigger gap at idle, which is where you have the least energy from the magneto. i could get the engine to run a .040 gap on the stock coil, but it would never hold it at idle, because the stock coil couldnt amp up what little power it was getting.
the coil i used is a 150:1 turn ratio and internally ballasted, so when the rpms climb and the volts rise it shouldnt be as big a problem as an unballasted coil.
i’m not endorsing the MSD coil, im pushing the bosch.
