Fabio of the old VespaSuperShop told me once that the European version of the Grande “Gilera Model50 CB1” was built to handle a 125cc engine. Here is a picture of that model. Note that it is a chain drive and has a swing arm instead of a subframe.
I used to get a lot of Bravos and Grandes in my shop that had a tear in metal subframe where the pedal crankshaft went through the subframe. This was caused by people riding with the pedals in the Up and Down position rather than Horizontal. When they would corner, down they would go when the down pedal hit the ground.
I have also seen a lot of Grandes and Bravos with the rear wheel mounting holes torn as a result of the wheel mounting bolts not being torqued properly.
If you brace the subframe, I’m not sure what it would do to the stability of the bike. Maybe Piaggio wanted a subframe with a little flexibility.
