Don”t know where Allen read it but i you want a source it’s on page 126 of AG Bells book.
”...detonation will show signs of pitting on the crown. The edge will be grey and eroded, as if sand blasted. In the very early stages, grey ash-like deposits form on the exhaust-side edge os the piston crown.”
Since it is a back deposit that dose not apply. Sounds to me like carbon build-up on the crown due to an imcompleat burn of the mixture.
A lot of times a well tuned bike will have a triangle shaped area that is a nice brown color on the crown of the piston facing the exhaust port.
