Strange Carbon Pattern on Piston

Hi,
In the never ending quest to figure out why the hell my bike won’t idle/find the mystery air leak we (Brennan, Leo, and I) pulled the head off the engine and found something seemingly strange. There was A LOT of carbon buildup on the piston. The strange thing is that it was only on the bottom half of the piston, the top half was shiny clean, no build up at all. This iston was just installed a couple weeks back and has been been ridden on. Is this some clue as to whats happening with the bike? What does this mean? We were guessing it might be a clue as to a major air leak. Thoughts?
